Background
Jiang Lu entered the Wenjian Sect feeling lost and anxious. Gu Chengming helped him complete his enrollment and showed him around the sect, leaving Jiang Lu indebted to him despite Gu's poor cultivation reputation 2.
As Liu Enchuan's disciple in Huiyuan Gate, Jiang Lu was sent to warn Gu Chengming that poor performance in the Sect Assessment could result in expulsion. He initially believed Gu had wasted his potential, but still offered guidance in the Huiyuan Sword Technique out of gratitude and concern for Huiyuan Gate's standing 2 3.
Personality
Jiang Lu is steady, orderly, and dependable. Liu Enchuan considers him the most promising among Huiyuan Gate's current disciples despite his merely average cultivation talent; Jiang Lu answers his master's questions clearly and handles matters responsibly 15.
He is considerate toward fellow disciples, repeatedly warning Gu Chengming of potential trouble, offering cultivation supplies, and even volunteering his merit points to aid Gu's recovery 12 15 42. He is also unusually generous with knowledge: after creating his own sword move, he offers to teach it to Gu Chengming without compensation 7.
Jiang Lu can be anxious and overly trusting in sudden crises. Gu Chengming convinces him that two Daoning Gate disciples are disguised rogue cultivators, prompting him to flee without fully processing the situation 28. However, when Wenjian Sect's honor is challenged, he acts with resolve despite knowing he is outmatched 64.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Jiang Lu's comprehension of martial stances exceeds that of ordinary disciples, though his cultivation talent is described as average 3. He initially approaches Gu Chengming to correct what he considers an improper interpretation of the Huiyuan Sword Art, but Gu's entangling sword intent defeats him after more than thirty exchanges 3 4.
- His foundational Huiyuan Sword Technique emphasizes coolness, detachment, speed, accuracy, and lightness 3.
- He adapts during combat, incorporating sharp killing intent drawn from the Jinghong Sword into the Huiyuan Sword Technique in an attempt to break Gu's control 3.
- His defeat leads him to recognize the limitations of his prior understanding and to seek further improvement 4 7.
Fuhai / “Overturning Sea”
After reflecting on Gu Chengming's entangling sword intent, Jiang Lu develops the Raging Waves Overturning Sea Style, also called Fuhai. The move layers momentum continuously, culminating in an overwhelming tide-like strike 7 8.
- He creates the move himself and defeats several higher-realm senior brothers in exchanges with it 7.
- He offers the technique freely to Gu Chengming as thanks for his earlier guidance 7.
- Gu Chengming identifies flaws in the move's transitions and teaches Jiang Lu the more complete “Overturning Sea” concept, making Jiang Lu's technique smoother and stronger 8.
- Jiang Lu uses a standard Fuhai opening stance when challenging Li Mozi of the Yunyue Sect 64.
- Liu Enchuan later judges that Fuhai would have seriously troubled Li Mozi without the gap in cultivation realm 70.
Myriad Wonders Same Abyss Method
Seeking a way past his First Realm Level Seven bottleneck, Jiang Lu accepts a copy of the controversial Myriad Wonders Same Abyss Method from an outer disciple 57.
- The method uses Spiritual Power resonance between practitioners to improve cultivation efficiency 57.
- Jiang Lu studies it enthusiastically and brings the manual to Gu Chengming, believing it may be an opportunity for disciples of mediocre talent 57.
- He later becomes involved with the Myriad Wonders Society and shares his enthusiasm for its benefits with Gu Chengming 62.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Warning Gu Chengming and the First Spar
Jiang Lu warns Gu Chengming of the coming Sect Assessment and the danger of remaining at First Realm Level Three. He then begins visiting Gu to provide guidance in Huiyuan Sword Technique 2 3.
Believing Gu's lingering, “entangled” sword style to be a mistake, Jiang Lu initiates a corrective spar. Gu instead traps Jiang Lu in accumulating sticky sword momentum, disarms him, and defeats him. The loss overturns Jiang Lu's assumptions about both Gu and the sword path 3 4.
Development of Fuhai
Jiang Lu returns after reflecting on his defeat, sincerely thanks Gu, and presents his self-created Raging Waves Overturning Sea Style. Gu refines the technique's underlying momentum and offers to teach Jiang Lu its truer form, deepening Jiang Lu's admiration for him 7 8.
Daoning Gate Incident
Jiang Lu accompanies Gu Chengming to the sect market, where Gu defeats Su He and Li Miao. Although Jiang Lu does not fight, the two Daoning Gate disciples falsely accuse him of participating in the ambush 28 31.
Gu publicly takes responsibility for acting alone, shielding Jiang Lu from Elder Liu's accusation. Ren Wencai subsequently rewards Jiang Lu with two porcelain bottles for reporting the matter 31 32.
Disciple Assessment and Yunyue Sect Challenge
Jiang Lu keeps Gu informed about changes to the Disciple Assessment, including its greater emphasis on Dao Heart and practical sword arts. He later accompanies Gu to the Sword Seeking Platform 41 44.
When Li Mozi humiliates Wenjian Sect disciples and demands that they challenge her together, Jiang Lu steps forward alone. He is severely injured after Li Mozi crushes his sword momentum, but earns her acknowledgment for his bearing as a sword cultivator 64 65.
During his recovery, Gu visits him with healing medicine and written notes on countering fast swords and maximizing Fuhai's momentum. Jiang Lu resolves to recover and live up to Gu's expectations 70 71.
Later Cultivation
After reaching First Realm Level Eight, Jiang Lu continues consulting Gu Chengming on subtle points of cultivation and adjusts his mindset after being shaken by Gu's rapid advancement 80 93. Several years later, he has reached the Second Realm, though Gu's advancement toward the middle of the Third Realm again leaves him stunned 277.

- You Yuyao — Fellow Wenjian Sect disciple from Jingshui Pavilion. Jiang Lu worries about her conflict with Gu and personally leads her to Gu's residence when she seeks to apologize 12 54.
