Fu Xiaoxiao was sent by her master to live for three months in Joyful Town without cultivating, so that she could understand the mortal world before attempting to cultivate the Mortal World Art. Rather than treating the Joyful Union Sect's Dao as a path centered solely on desire and dual cultivation, Fu Xiaoxiao cultivated ordinary human life: reunions and partings, household lights on New Year's Eve, mourning at Qingming, births, deaths, and the small emotions of common people. After returning to the Joyful Union Sect in poor condition, Fu Xiaoxiao was placed in heavily guarded seclusion under Yun Ni's arrangements. She opposed Yun Ni's plan to cooperate with the Longevity Sect and refused to abandon her principles despite the danger to herself and the sect. 141 142

When Gu Chengming infiltrated the Joyful Union Sect, Fu Xiaoxiao tried to force him to leave rather than let him become entangled in the crisis. He instead uncovered her true feelings and chose to seek outside support. 143
