Formation and Absorption

A Soul Ring forms when a Soul Beast dies, leaving its energy behind for a Soul Master to absorb. Tang San's first ring appears after he delivers the final blow to the Ice Crystal Grass, while a Three-Thousand-Year Shadow Leopard likewise leaves behind a purple ring after its death 5.

A Soul Beast can also sacrifice itself voluntarily. The Titan Giant Ape's sacrifice condenses a deep-red Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Ring and transfers its life energy and Soul Power directly to Lin Mu 26.

Absorbing a Soul Ring allows a Soul Master to pass a cultivation bottleneck and gain a Soul Skill. Tang San requires a first ring to become a Soul Master and resolve the bottleneck of his Mysterious Heaven Skill 5.

Age, Compatibility, and Risk

Soul Ring age is constrained by the absorber's physique, Soul Power, Martial Soul, and endurance. Lin Mu states that a first ring is generally limited to roughly 400 years, while rejecting the supposed universal limit of 423 years because individual endurance varies greatly 5.

• A ring that exceeds the user's capacity can cause fatal backlash; Lin Mu warns Tang San that absorbing the Three-Thousand-Year Shadow Leopard's ring would make his body explode 5.
• Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Rings impose both overwhelming energy and a distinctive soul shock during absorption 50.
• Attribute incompatibility can damage a Soul Master's foundation. Flender warns that a Fire-attribute Soul Master absorbing an Ice-attribute ring could ruin the ring or destroy the user's cultivation base 21.
• Ma Hongjun's Ice-attribute third ring strips away his Phoenix flames, leaving his Martial Soul as an ordinary chicken despite raising his Soul Power to Level 32 92.
• Suitable rings can improve a Martial Soul's inherent quality, while unsuitable draconic rings may dilute the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Martial Soul rather than strengthen it 129.

Soul Ring colors visibly reflect exceptional ring ages in documented cases: Tang San's first ring is yellow at over 300 years, the Shadow Leopard's Three-Thousand-Year ring is purple, Ten-Thousand-Year rings are black, and Hundred-Thousand-Year rings are red 5 26 33.

Lin Mu can directly increase a ring's age through quest rewards. He upgrades his third ring into a Ten-Thousand-Year ring, changing his configuration to two yellow, four black, and one red 86. He later raises his second ring by another ten thousand years, leaving only one yellow ring 124. Completion of his main quest eventually increases the age of all his Soul Rings by 100,000 years 294.

Functions and Properties

Martial Soul Enhancement

Soul Rings can strengthen a Martial Soul beyond simply providing skills.

• Tang San's Thousand Blade Golden Chrysanthemum ring improves Blue Silver Grass's Life Force and gives its detached leaves cutting power 17.
• The Ten-Thousand-Year Jade Swan ring makes Tang San's Blue Silver Grass thicker, tougher, faster, and more strongly colored, while drawing out part of his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline 57.
• Tang San's Blue Silver Emperor awakening enhances all four of his existing Soul Skills as well as the Martial Soul's strength and resilience 127.
• Soul Rings from appropriate True Dragon Soul Beasts can substantially improve Yu Tianheng's Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Martial Soul 129.

Soul Skills

Each absorbed ring may grant a Soul Skill aligned with the source Soul Beast and the user's Martial Soul.

• Leaf Blades — Tang San's second ring allows Blue Silver Grass leaves to attack after leaving the body, creating a wide-area cutting barrage 17.
• Blue Silver Pill — Tang San's fourth ring condenses pills from Life Force and Soul Power. They remove negative effects and restore five percent of a user's Life Force, with the restoration weakening against stronger Soul Masters but never falling below one percent 57.
• Ten Thousand Arrows Volley — Lin Mu's fifth ring compresses wind elements into a dense rain of cyan arrows 25.

God-Bestowed Soul Rings

God-Bestowed Soul Rings are perfectly compatible with their recipient's Martial Soul and do not carry the usual risk of soul shock during absorption 207. Their energy comes from the Sea God's Light, and higher-age rings consume more of that energy 243.

Tang San, Ye Lingling, and Xiao Wu each receive a God-Bestowed Seventh Soul Ring after surpassing Level 60 before beginning their Sea God trials 243.

Soul Spirit Attachment

Lin Mu gains the ability to attach Soul Spirits to existing Soul Rings. The attached Soul Spirit increases a ring's age by an amount equal to the spirit's cultivation 197.

• The Sky Azure Bull Python attaches to Lin Mu's sixth ring, transforming it into a red ring while preserving Da Ming's consciousness 208.
• Zi Ji attaches to Lin Mu's fifth ring, producing a configuration of four black rings, four red rings, and one gold ring 227.
• Two additional Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Spirits are attached to Lin Mu's fourth and seventh rings; the former is wind-attributed and the latter earth-attributed 233.
• Soul Spirits can manifest independently in soul form and retain their awareness, as demonstrated by Da Ming and the Deep Sea Demonic Whale King 227.
