Organization

The Imperial Guards are divided into the Northern, Southern, and Eastern Garrison Commands. Their commander holds authority over all three branches. 613 614

Recruitment and ranks

• General recruitment requires at least Eighth Rank Martial Dao, Body Tempering Realm cultivation. Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian practitioners rarely enlist despite their usefulness against supernatural threats. 66
• The Eastern Garrison Command accepts recruits with at least Ninth Rank strength; recruits immediately receive official status. 77
• Eastern Garrison personnel are expected to meet strict standards of conduct and morality because they represent the Emperor outside the palace. 77

Authority and reputation

• Imperial Guards can arrest officials without first submitting evidence to the Ministry of Justice, obtaining an arrest warrant, or securing approval from the official's own ministry. 92

Appearance and equipment

Imperial Guards are recognized by their Flying Fish Robes—also called Feiyu Imperial Robes—which visibly mark their authority and often silence civilians or officials who might otherwise challenge them. 64 200

Training and combat methods

Martial cultivation

Imperial Guard units include many trained Martial Dao cultivators. A thirty-man escort assigned to guard military funds consisted largely of Seventh Rank martial artists, while Xu Xiaogang was Sixth Rank. 128
