Background / History

Feng Yu was born in Nanzhou Prefecture to an impoverished family. His father squandered what little money they had on drink and pleasure quarters, leaving Feng Yu to beg for food as a child. Seeing the deference shown to a palace eunuch returning to Nanzhou convinced him to enter palace service. His shared hometown later became one reason for his favorable treatment of Jiang Yun. 370

By the time of Prince Su's death, Feng Yu had risen to chief eunuch of the Imperial Household Department, a position directly below the Directorate of Ceremonial. Emperor Xiao Yuzheng sent him to Nanzhou to question Xiao Jingyuan about the prince's death; Feng Yu immediately warned the heir apparent that the Emperor could tolerate mistakes but not lies. 53

As Xiao Yuzheng's close attendant, Feng Yu managed sensitive court affairs, accepted bribes, pressured officials, and advocated restoring the Eastern Depot to investigate entrenched corruption. He recommended Jiang Yun as an investigator with a clean background and little fear of offending powerful people. 96 105

Feng Yu repeatedly protected Xiao Yuzheng during crises. During the Red Lotus Cult's attack, he killed Cui Cheng before the assassin could reach the Emperor and was left to manage the aftermath. 136 He later saved Jiang Yun from Copper Pillar and eliminated the plague-spreading beast Pupu. 165

His ties to Princess Linglong were unusually close. He came personally to ensure her safety during the Blood Demon's appearance, addressed her as “Princess,” and knelt in remorse for arriving late. 231 232 He also intervened to prevent Qingfeng Temple from killing Ao Yu after recognizing her politically sensitive identity. 283

After Xiao Yuzheng's assassination, Feng Yu was devastated but refused to move against Crown Prince Xiao Jingqing, believing eunuchs were servants who could not interfere in the royal family's succession. 602 604 Under Xiao Jingzhi, he was placed in charge of the Tongyou Guard, whose members included eight First Rank experts and numerous Second Rank experts. 613

Feng Yu was ultimately ambushed by Dan Tiangang and Fang Zhihong while returning from warning Jiang Yun about the dangers of high office. Though he wounded Fang Zhihong and attempted to escape with a jade pendant, Dan Tiangang overpowered him and stabbed him through the chest. Feng Yu's final concern was for Emperor Xiao Jingzhi's safety. 649

He is also ruthless. Feng Yu uses blackmail during interrogations, executes prisoners without hesitation, and openly enjoys personally performing castrations. 181 195 392 His corruption is equally overt: he accepts gold, silver, tea, and other gifts in exchange for favors or influence. 95 181 202

Despite these traits, Feng Yu's loyalty to Xiao Yuzheng and the imperial household is unwavering. He repeatedly risks himself to protect the Emperor, protects Princess Linglong, and remains focused on Xiao Jingzhi's safety even while dying. 136 232 649
