History

The Sect Master spends years in seclusion while recovering from damage to his cultivation foundation. During his absence, Shangguan Yi manages much of Myriad Sword Pavilion’s affairs, though major decisions still require the Sect Master’s approval 76 147 173. News that the sect has recruited Qin Lingyu and Chu Huangyue briefly raises his hopes; Qin Lingyu’s reported death instead prompts him to reconsider the sect’s future 147 148.

After meeting Yun Shu and hearing his account of Qin Lingyu’s betrayal, he gives Yun Shu the Sect Master’s Golden Seal. He also passes on methods for controlling the sect’s formations, the Myriad Sword Art, and records reserved for successive Sect Masters. Yun Shu is initially to issue orders in his name while retaining the rank of Deacon Disciple 159 161 162.

The Sect Master later supplies Yun Shu with his personal cultivation resources and steps down when Yun Shu formally takes charge 202 263 264. He remains involved when the sect faces danger: he emerges alongside the Grey-robed Elder during an attack, later discusses the sect’s emergency Teleportation Array, and fights an invading Nascent Soul cultivator using the grand formation 304 311 333.

Appearance

He initially appears handsome and middle-aged, with a pale, sickly face that contrasts with his bearing as a sword cultivator 147 158.

• Hair — Later has silver hair 338.
• Bearing — Even after a severe loss of cultivation, he retains an imposing presence 338.

Personality

He feels the pressure of leading a declining sect and is willing to relinquish the position rather than keep an unsuitable successor from taking charge. He rejects Shangguan Yi as a candidate despite acknowledging his administrative role 148. In Yun Shu, he sees both the ability to lead and a cultivator whose rapid growth might soon take him beyond the Pavilion; passing on the sect’s inheritances is therefore a deliberate decision 162 163.
