August weather really killed the appetite.
Jiang Yang took a couple of casual bites, then eagerly returned to his computer.
He opened Perfect Play Platform and was just about to start an exciting ranked match when he saw someone inviting him.
When he looked, he found it was his high school deskmate, Li Hua.
They had previously been around the same rank. Back when CS:GO exploded in popularity in 2019, it had been Li Hua who introduced Jiang Yang to CS:GO.
Their skill levels had been similar before, so there was no rank gap between them. Jiang Yang simply joined the lobby.
After logging into QQ, he saw Li Hua.
"Hey, hey, hey, what's going on, Jiang Yang? Didn't you say you were going to work in a factory tightening screws? How do you still have time to play at this hour?"
"Don't talk about me, Li Hua. Didn't you say you were losing weight over summer break? Don't you still have time to play too?"
They each mocked the other once, then Li Hua asked, "Anyone else coming? If not, let's just queue."
"Let's go."
Jiang Yang glanced at the bottom-right corner. Li Hua had still chosen his usual three maps, the ones he was better at.
"Damn, you did pretty well in your placement matches. Did you suddenly achieve enlightenment or something?"
Hearing his deskmate's assessment, Jiang Yang smiled disdainfully. "What do you mean, enlightenment? This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to my skill, okay?"
"Let's set a small goal first: reach number one on Perfect World!"
Li Hua did not argue after hearing that. Instead, he echoed, "True. With our skill, being number one on Perfect World would only happen because it can only have one number one. I'll work a little harder too and see if I can replace S1mple on NAVI tomorrow."
Li Hua was not being sarcastic. He simply thought Jiang Yang was joking with him.
Jiang Yang did not explain either. Some things were meant to be done, not talked about.
After finishing off 5,000 Bots earlier, his arms had felt slightly sore, but after lunch, they had recovered quite a bit.
While they waited for matchmaking, Jiang Yang and Li Hua complained to each other about some issues with their majors. They looked forward to college life, yet also felt rather lost about the university days that awaited them.
Just before the three-minute mark, they finally found a match.
The map was Dust II, the famous Dust II.
Jiang Yang's side started on defense.
As the pistol round began, Jiang Yang took the initiative to communicate over voice chat, and the three random teammates responded enthusiastically.
The C+ rank on Perfect World was an extremely peculiar mixed bag.
Generally, either every teammate in a match was willing to communicate with you, or everyone you got matched with was a mute who said nothing.
For the pistol round, Jiang Yang went to the Mid sand area and held Mid with a USP.
The terrorists chose a relatively simple pincer strategy through A Short and A Main.
Then, a moment later, Jiang Yang saw three terrorists trying to push forward through the A Short passage.
"Three at A Short!" Jiang Yang exchanged fire with them using his USP while making the callout over voice chat.
The enemy was incredibly stubborn too. Once they saw Jiang Yang, they did not leave. They just stood there and dueled him.
Jiang Yang was fearless as well. He had only just finished killing 5,000 Bots, and right now, he felt terrifyingly strong!
He did not know whether it was psychological, but after that hour of aim training, he could clearly feel that his control over the mouse had improved.
With one magazine, he forcibly took down the first two enemies. However, the third enemy swung out for the Follow-up Shot. Jiang Yang had only one bullet left in his magazine, so he could only fire and quickly retreat behind Cover.
Yet he had not expected that final bullet, which had clearly not been aimed properly, to land him a headshot kill.
Even Jiang Yang laughed.
Do you understand what it means to be a beneficiary of random bullet spread?
Watching the kill feed rapidly flood the Top Right Corner, Li Hua praised him. "Not bad! You're killing them like that?"
Jiang Yang got a triple kill at Mid in the pistol round. Although the players at A Main failed to hold, the Main Force at A Short had been killed, leaving the remaining two terrorists with little room to operate.
Besides, they had no intention of making plays. They simply swung out to duel the Counter-Terrorists, quickly losing the pistol round.
The match soon reached the second round.
Winning the pistol round was a good start, but figuring out how to secure this round without getting overturned was also crucial.
In yesterday's placement matches, there had been far too many times when they won the pistol round only to get overturned afterward. That kept the score from widening later on and put them under tremendous pressure.
Since he wanted to become a professional player, he had to handle even such minor details properly.
Jiang Yang considered what hunter would do in this kind of match.
For example, which weapon would be better to buy on this map, which areas were easier to perform in, and how he could avoid being traded after getting a kill.
[Hunter's ECO Special Attack (Not Yet Started)] [Progress: (0/100)] [Traits: None.]
Ah!
Jiang Yang stared blankly at the lines of small text appearing before his eyes.
"Come on, man?"
"This works too? Does that mean the system gives more than just insights?"
"Doesn't that mean he could grow stronger through effort with similar skills in the future?"
"System, you know this—I have the Innate Special Forces Saint Body!"
Jiang Yang rubbed his hands together, growing even more eager for the upcoming ranked battles.
Hunter's previous skill insights had not contained much. They had mostly been scattered bits of understanding.
After thinking it over, Jiang Yang chose to buy an MP9.
Then he quietly rushed through Mid Doors and into the B1 floor.
He was not playing randomly. He had thought it through carefully.
The enemy had little money this round. Trying to take A Main would be a dead end.
So there was a high chance they would rush B right from the start.
And the cramped terrain of the B1 floor was perfect for an SMG.
He planned to hide at the corner between the B1 floor and B2 floor, then spray them down the moment they swung out.
However, just as he reached the corner, he heard a mass of footsteps coming from the B2 floor.
"They're at B2!"
Jiang Yang felt that his position was very hidden and wanted to wait for them to slowly creep out, but their target was not B1—they were rushing!
Li Hua shouted anxiously over voice chat, "They're rushing! Get back to B!!"
Hearing that, Jiang Yang knew he could not stay hidden any longer and decisively made his move!
He swung out from the B2 floor, and not a single enemy was watching his position.
The instant he swung out, he saw the exposed sides of three enemies advancing toward B Area.
"Perfect chance!"
Jiang Yang's eyes sharpened. He picked out the closest of the three enemies, steadied himself, and began spraying with his MP9.
"Rat-tat-tat!"
The MP9's distinctive gunfire rang out as bullets continuously struck his opponents.
After getting the first kill, Jiang Yang immediately switched targets and fired at the enemy at mid-range, successfully pinning him down with a full spray.
But he had wasted too many bullets. When he wanted to shoot the third enemy, his magazine was already empty. The enemy had reacted too, and two of them focused fire to instantly kill him.
"Hiss, I shouldn't have been greedy just now. I should've fallen back after killing the second one." Jiang Yang reviewed his death in that exchange.
He had been a little too straightforward. Once his bullets ran out, he could only stand there and get shot.
Still, thanks to his delay at the B1 floor, the enemy formation had completely split apart. Li Hua caught the terrorists who had pushed into his face, leaving only two terrorists in B Tunnel.
Just as Jiang Yang thought they could smoothly take the round, several random teammates saw their numerical advantage and knew the enemy had no good guns, so they went looking for them.
Then Jiang Yang watched them throw themselves away one by one like the Calabash Brothers trying to save their grandpa.
Luckily, the enemy made a dumb mistake in the end, allowing them to win without any real danger.
That round further solidified Jiang Yang's thinking.
When dealing with an ECO round, they absolutely could not mess around. One careless mistake could directly lead to an overturn.
In the rounds that followed, Jiang Yang actively came out swinging during ECO rounds.
There were rounds where his ECO plays were a huge success, and others where he got killed without catching a single opponent.
But all of it became experience for him.
With Jiang Yang seriously trying to win and his teammates not being disastrously bad,
they ultimately took this Dust II match with a score of 16:8.
Jiang Yang even posted a stat line of 25 kills, 3 assists, and 10 deaths.
Still, Jiang Yang knew that at least ten of those kills had come from ECO rounds.
But did kills in ECO rounds have no value?
Of course not. Jiang Yang used the money earned from ECO rounds to buy guns for his teammates several times, which played an enormous role.
After that match ended, he finally saw the skill proficiency change.
[Hunter's ECO Special Attack (Beginner)] [Progress: (2/500)] [Special Effect: When dealing with ECO rounds, your thinking becomes clearer.]
Jiang Yang could clearly feel that his understanding of anti-ECO rounds had improved. Thinking back over several ECO situations from the match, he could plainly come up with several better solutions.
If he was dealing with an ECO, he would be even more confident.
"Again, again!"
The positive feedback from improving his skill made Jiang Yang impatient to start the next match.
Sorry for being a little late. I'll figure out a way to keep the posting time consistent soon...
