George gave Fred a look reserved for idiots and leaned close to his ear. "You foolish little brother, this is a girls' bathroom!"
"You're the little brother!" Fred glared at him.
Then Hermione and the other two shot them furious looks. The twins ducked their heads and fell silent.
Moaning Myrtle seemed not to hear them. Still lost in her memories, she went on, "So I opened the door and told him to go away and use the boys' bathroom. And then..." She paused, looking terribly pleased with herself. She puffed out her chest, her face radiant. "I died!"
The Three Little Ones froze. What was there to be proud of?
Fred and George, however, clapped in unison. "That's incredible!"
Ron stared at them as if they were idiots, and Hermione's mouth twitched. Harry paid none of it any attention. "How did you die?" he pressed.
Moaning Myrtle put on a mysterious expression. "I don't know. I just saw a pair of enormous yellow eyes. It felt as though my whole body had been seized, and then I floated away—"
Her voice rose with excitement. "But I came back! I wanted to settle the score with Olive Hornby!"
Harry glanced at Hermione. Everything seemed to match her deduction: Moaning Myrtle's death sounded very much like an encounter with the Basilisk.
And the boy's voice had most likely belonged to Voldemort in his youth.
If that was right, Hermione had probably guessed correctly. The entrance to the Chamber of Secrets was here!
"Where did you see those eyes?" Harry asked, tense with hope that Moaning Myrtle hadn't missed that detail when she died.
"Somewhere around there—" Moaning Myrtle pointed vaguely toward the row of sinks.
Without waiting for Harry to say a word, everyone rushed over and began examining them carefully.
