Background
The Xiao Family was once among the most powerful of the Eight Ancient Clans. Its ancestor, Xiao Xuan, was the continent's foremost expert and attempted to reach the Dou God realm by pooling the clan's bloodline; he failed and perished roughly a thousand years before the story. The bloodline subsequently withered, and the clan declined after sustained hostility and division by other forces, especially the Soul Clan. 12 35
Although Xiao Xuan had entrusted Gu Yuan with protecting the clan's descendants, Gu Yuan neglected that duty as the Xiao Family deteriorated into a remote Wutan City clan unable to produce even a Dou King. 11 12
The family retains the Tou She Ancient God Jade, an ancestral patriarchal token coveted by the Soul Clan and the Hall of Souls. Xiao Zhan initially regarded it as a ceremonial heirloom before Xiao Yao revealed its significance. 35
Rise under Xiao Yao
Xiao Yao first publicly elevated the family's reputation by defeating Nalan Yanran during her confrontation with Xiao Yan in the Xiao Family hall. At fifteen, he declared himself a seven-star Dou Practitioner, and his victory made him an object of admiration among the clansmen. 1 10
After obtaining the Imperial Seal Art, Xiao Yao destroyed the Gale and Ouba Families in a single night, removing the Xiao Family's principal rivals in Wutan City. He attributed the feat to a mysterious “master” and distributed cultivation resources to rapidly strengthen the clan. 13
The family later survived an attack by Protector Wu and another Hall of Souls Protector. The protective barrier left through Xiao Yao's arrangements held against their assault until he returned, defeated the invaders, and killed the Ninth Heavenly Venerate's clone. 29 31 34
Following the battle, Xiao Yao disclosed the family's ancient history, the Soul Clan's interest in the ancestral jade, and his intention to restore—and surpass—the Xiao Family's former standing. The elders offered him the position of Patriarch, but he refused and left clan administration to continue under its existing leadership. 35
