Night fell.
Lu Bai gazed at the crescent moon that had risen at some point and stretched.
"What a fulfilling day."
Zombies still wandered the streets, and their howls could be heard from time to time. They seemed to become even more active at night.
After sunset, the wind on the rooftop grew noticeably stronger.
Lu Bai tucked his chin into his collar and planned to climb down from the railing and find somewhere in the building to make do for the night.
Just then, a beam of light flashed over him.
He instantly went on high alert, flipped back onto the rooftop, and used the railing as cover.
"A sniper rifle? Or something else?"
His knowledge of firearms was limited to the shooting games he'd played in his previous life.
But he'd heard a thing or two about the power of sniper rifles.
A Barrett could take off over five hundred HP with a headshot. Scared yet?
After crouching behind the railing for more than ten seconds, Lu Bai cautiously poked his head out and scanned the area. He soon spotted where the light was coming from.
It was the windowsill on the fifth floor of the hotel diagonally across from him.
The other person didn't seem to be making any effort to hide. In fact, they kept waving the light around, as if they were afraid no one would notice.
Seeing that, Lu Bai realized they probably didn't mean him any harm. He hesitated for a moment, then waved in their direction.
After being infected with the Zombie Virus, Lu Bai's hearing had improved considerably, but his eyesight hadn't changed much.
With dozens of meters between them and visibility reduced by the night, he stared at the window for a long while. At best, he could make out a man and a woman in the room.
He could vaguely see the man saying something. His expression was too hard to make out, but his increasingly animated gestures suggested that he was getting worked up.
"Did he think I was about to jump just now?"
Lu Bai smiled amiably and waved again.
"Hurry up and get him to throw us some food!" Zhou Meina tugged hard at Tang Peng's collar.
After going hungry for a day and a night, the young couple's eyes were practically glowing green.
Unfortunately, the hotel's observation window had been designed with safety as the top priority. It could tilt upward by at most 45 degrees, barely enough for ventilation.
"I'm trying!"
Tang Peng shoved the hotel window as far open as it would go, then struggled to lean halfway out and shout at Lu Bai. "Hey, brother! Give us a hand! Throw us some food!"
In the quiet of the night, Tang Peng's shout sounded especially jarring.
Lu Bai looked at the zombies outside as they began to lift their heads. He raised an index finger to his lips, signaling Tang Peng to quiet down first.
But neither Tang Peng nor Zhou Meina understood what he meant.
"Fuck! What the hell is that bastard trying to say?" Tang Peng cursed furiously.
Zhou Meina dropped to the floor and screamed hysterically, "Can't you tell? That guy definitely doesn't want to share his food with us!"
She kept pounding the floor. A few strands of hair had fallen across her lips, but she was too worked up to care.
When faced with despair, few people could keep their cool.
As far as they were concerned, a department store as big as this one couldn't possibly be short on food.
"What good is making a scene going to do!?"
Tang Peng's face darkened. He was on the verge of flying into a rage.
Zhou Meina immediately shot back, "All you do is yell at me! Why don't you tell me what we should do, then?"
They were angry, but they hadn't forgotten what had happened.
The sight of Lu Bai kicking through the tempered-glass entrance not long ago was still fresh in their minds. Even if they wanted to put up a fight, they had no way to do it.
On the rooftop of the department store.
Lu Bai saw the couple across the way close their window and quiet down. He gave it no further thought, turned around, and left the rooftop to find somewhere to rest.
The next day.
Lu Bai woke on a leather bed in the bedding section, where it was up for sale, and sat upright.
He rubbed the area around his eyes, trying to force himself awake, then got up and left the bedding section.
"These zombies are truly hopeless..."
Lu Bai sighed blearily.
He really hadn't slept well the night before. His head felt heavy and muddled.
In the middle of the night, the zombies outside had been so active it was like they were throwing a party.
Lu Bai wasn't sure if the zombies' throats had gone hoarse from all that howling, but after listening to it all night, he felt like he was about to lose it himself.
He didn't properly wake up until he'd splashed cold water on his face.
Lu Bai yawned lazily and turned off the tap. "But the city's water supply is still running. Did the water treatment plant go fully automated or something?"
After grumbling a little, Lu Bai hung a certain Shuangying's sidearm back on his belt.
For the record, although he'd been carrying the gun around, he had no intention of using it. It was more of a comfort than anything else.
The thing was simply too unreliable. It might turn out to have no bullets at a crucial moment. A cold weapon like the Eight-Sided Han Sword was much more dependable.
Of course, after cutting down so many zombies and death fighters, he'd also gotten used to it.
Lu Bai carried the Eight-Sided Han Sword downstairs, picking up a few useful things along the way and stuffing them into his pockets.
Maybe the zombies had made such a racket the night before that they'd all gone off to find somewhere to sleep.
The entire department store, along with the streets outside, was unusually quiet.
There was always something refreshing about the morning air, even in the middle of a city.
Lu Bai stepped over the broken glass and walked out of the department store. He greedily drew in a deep breath, as if it washed away most of his fatigue.
Creak~
Lu Bai caught a barely audible sound.
He followed it and looked up. The window on the hotel's fifth floor was being pushed open.
A wall-mounted television then came crashing down onto the road not far from Lu Bai.
Tang Peng glared at him with bloodshot eyes and a twisted expression. "If you won't give us food, then you can die!"
Before he'd even finished speaking, more heavy objects came flying out of the window, playing a shrill symphony as they crashed down.
The nearby zombies heard the commotion and began to howl.
A few zombies at the street corner spotted Lu Bai in the middle of the road and came charging at him, their bodies twisting wildly.
"Tsk."
The smile on Lu Bai's face grew even more amiable. "When did I ever offend you?"
"Bah! I just don't like the look of you. Got a problem with that? Bite me!" Tang Peng spat, his expression twisted to the point of madness.
"I didn't really want to kill anyone first thing in the morning, but walking away probably wouldn't be a good idea. I'll just call it doing the people a favor."
Facing someone like this, Lu Bai still didn't feel even the slightest bit of anger. He silently activated [Blood Rage].
The moment [Blood Rage] activated, his skin visibly flushed red.
The dizziness caused by his blood loss was quickly overwhelmed by the power surging endlessly through his body.
To Tang Peng, Lu Bai's appearance meant he was angry—just a little more obvious about it than most.
So he sneered. "Classic impotent rage."
