Background

Zhao Wuji was the ancient, reclusive patriarch of the Zhao Family in Black Water City. He dwelled beneath the Zhao Family mansion in an underground cavern containing a blood pool, a White Bone Lotus Throne made from human skulls, and the Corpse Pill he intended to use for a breakthrough. Though he possessed substantial cultivation, prolonged exposure to corpse aura and death qi had left his body severely deteriorated. 14 15

Seeking to complete his Foundation Establishment, Zhao Wuji arranged the Blood Sacrifice Grand Array. He required the blood of an Extreme Yin Body—Lin Xiaowan—and intended to drain children and formation guardians for the ritual. Zhao Rong brought Lin Xiaowan to him after Yan Kui offered her as a bargaining chip. 14 16

Yan Kui later gained Zhao Wuji's trust by presenting the Body Nourishing Technique, which Zhao Wuji believed could ease his death-qi corrosion and prolong his life. Zhao Wuji appointed Yan Kui to guard the Kun position of the ritual array, intending to use him as expendable blood-sacrifice material. 15

Appearance

Before transforming, Zhao Wuji appeared as a shriveled, corpse-like old man. His failed ritual reshaped him into a towering half-corpse monster. 14 16

He initially regarded Yan Kui as a useful subordinate and potential sacrifice, underestimating the physical cultivation hidden beneath Yan Kui's apparent status as a mortal warrior. After the array was destroyed, he became enraged and increasingly irrational under the combined influence of Corpse Pill backlash, resentment, and failure. 15 17

Meeting with Yan Kui

Yan Kui meets Zhao Wuji while pretending to seek Zhao Family protection. Impressed by Yan Kui's ability to withstand his pressure and eager for the offered Body Nourishing Technique, Zhao Wuji recruits him as a formation guardian and grants him access to the family treasure vault. 15

Blood Sacrifice Night

During the ritual, Yan Kui destroys the Kun-position node rather than supporting the formation. Zhao Wuji suffers Corpse Pill backlash, transforms into a half-corpse monster, and battles Yan Kui in the underground cavern. 16

Death

Zhao Wuji fails to overcome Yan Kui's physical defenses and Qi and Blood Furnace. Yan Kui tears away his wings, crushes his chest, and destroys his upper body with the Bone Shattering Hammer, claiming the Corpse Pill and Zhao Wuji's Storage Bag afterward. 17
