After waiting for a long while, the black well remained perfectly still, without the slightest movement.
Just as Pei Ling began to grow suspicious, a powerful suction suddenly surged up from the bottom of the well.
He had no power to resist. In an instant, he was dragged down into the well, himself and his saber alike.
The dimness before his eyes flashed past. Soon, the scenery shifted, and Pei Ling found himself in a vast, empty valley.
Like the world outside the white palace, the valley was a desolate wasteland, everything weathered into sand. Broken stone pillars, shattered statues, and a flight of steps on the verge of collapse... Pei Ling barely moved, yet the airflow he stirred was enough to make them crumble into sand in an instant.
He swept his gaze around. Suddenly, he raised his head and looked up along the towering ivory pillar. What he had taken for a pillar was actually one of the legs of a giant skeleton.
It stood as tall as a mountain. Even with his head tilted back as far as it could go, Pei Ling could only make out its chin; he couldn't see enough to discern its face.
The giant sat upon a broad white throne carved with images of a hundred races. On either side of it stood smaller white seats, each carved with the likeness of a single alien race. They were all empty now, bathed in the dusky light of the sky and exuding an ancient, desolate air.
