They were the inhabitants of R'lyeh, Deep Ones, servants of the Great Old One, immortal and elevated beings.
In theory, under the protection of the great Cthulhu, they were perfectly safe. Who would dare attack them? Even if someone did, losing one or two of their kind was no big deal.
But this wasn't as simple as death. Something had slipped into R'lyeh and, right under the Great Old One's nose, was forcibly infecting and controlling them.
