814: A milestone, and a heartbreaking loss
James had broken the all-time scoring record in this game. Now, the next thing people were looking forward to was him reaching 40,000 points.
That would make him the only player in history to score 40,000 points.
He'd also be the only player to reach 40,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 10,000 assists.
Each of those three stats was incredibly difficult to achieve.
It wasn't just that no one in history had ever scored 40,000 points.
Even reaching 10,000 rebounds or 10,000 assists would be enough to make a player one of the best in today's league.
And now James was chasing the 40,000+10,000+10,000 record..
Looking across the stats in NBA history, Jordan's name appeared in almost every category. That was why he was called the Old Rogue.
And now James had joined him.
What's more, he kept making history, writing his name into one record after another.
He could be called a walking milestone, and a man chasing the Old Rogue's heights.
So there was a saying:
Some people are the Old Rogue, and some people are out there pulling a rogue.
Wang Yi hoped that one day his own name would be written into those history books, too.
Maybe his name would even be above James's and Jordan's.
Then he'd be the King of Rogues!
As a rule, James's milestones usually came with heartbreaking losses.
Sure enough, tonight was no exception.
The Lakers had led by as many as 17 points, but the Nets came back to win.
They fell just short, losing 127–129.
But after the loss, James wasn't as disappointed as he usually was.
Instead, he high-fived the Nets players as he said goodbye.
Before leaving, he even took the game ball with him.
The next day.
Wang Yi,
