Background / History

Itachi graduated from the Ninja Academy at seven years old and was selected as the graduating class's representative despite objections from some teachers. The Uchiha defended the choice on the grounds that his strength and accomplishments surpassed those of the other graduates. His mother Mikoto and younger brother Sasuke attended the ceremony. 6

At his graduation, Danzo confronted him with a hypothetical about sacrificing one infected person to save nine others. Qing Xuan answered before Itachi could respond, arguing that rational thought should not be confined to the “broken ship” of the dilemma; the encounter significantly altered Itachi's outlook. 6 7

Qing Xuan's arrival in Konoha introduced Itachi to a cousin who looked remarkably like him but behaved with far greater impulsiveness and openness. Fugaku encouraged Itachi to loosen his relentless focus on achievement, spend time with peers, and learn happiness; Itachi recognized that Qing Xuan possessed something he himself desired. 7 8
