Background / History
Bella was created by an unnamed Mind Mage as an attempt to produce a pure manifestation of human malice. The mage named her “Bella,” fabricated a village, family, and background for her, and placed her among experimental subjects stripped of their negative emotions. 41 42
Although designed as malice incarnate, Bella gradually developed emotions such as regret and guilt. The mage repeatedly interfered when her emotions began to balance, ultimately destabilizing her after the deaths of her assigned “parents.” 41
Before meeting Linton, Bella manipulated the villagers’ abnormal kindness and claimed responsibility for the deaths of her parents and seventeen others—four adults and thirteen children. She described deliberately placing herself in danger so that others would die while trying to save her. 39
Appearance
Bella appears as a small, child-like spirit with a soft, sweet voice. Ordinary villagers cannot see her, while intense emotional instability causes her spirit body to become transparent. 35 37 40
- Frequently holds Linton's hand and hides behind him when frightened. 35 38
- Is visibly drawn to flowers and eagerly points out pretty sights during travel. 36 38
- Her tears resemble liquid mercury and dissipate after leaving her face. 42
- Her body ultimately breaks apart into specks of starlight. 42
Personality
Bella initially behaves like an innocent, excitable child. She is fascinated by flowers, birds, candy, and the prospect of returning home, and she rapidly comes to trust Linton because he feels comfortable, smells nice, and gives her candy. 35 37 38
Her understanding of morality is simple and emotion-driven: people who make her happy are “good,” while those associated with discomfort are “bad.” She initially labels nearly everyone except Linton as bad, including Iris. 35 37
Beneath this childish demeanor, Bella carries immense malice shaped by magical experimentation. However, the malice is not her only defining trait; she is capable of affection, guilt, fear, regret, forgiveness, and a desire not to hurt anyone. 37 38 40 42
Abilities & Traits
Spirit Body
Bella is a magical spirit rather than a normal physical human.
- Cannot normally be seen by non-magical villagers. 37
- Cannot physically taste candy, but Linton can use magic to invoke her remembered sensation of sweetness. 35
- Emotional fluctuations consume the magic maintaining her form, causing transparency and eventual dissolution. 40 42
Emotional Resonance
Bella can resonate with the emotions of others, a trait noted in the mage's experiment records and cited by Linton as evidence of her capacity to grow beyond her original design. 41 42
- Her original malice was amplified while most other emotions were suppressed. 37 40
- Over time, her emotions began to rebalance naturally, prompting further interference from her creator. 41
- She develops guilt and remorse despite having been created as a manifestation of malice. 41 42
Relationships
- Linton Crewechill — Bella immediately regards him as a good person and accepts his promise to take her home. He investigates her condition, affirms her humanity, and comforts her during her final breakdown. 35 37 40 42
- Iris Lizer — Bella initially fears and calls Iris a bad person, but later gives her a flower and admits she does not dislike her. Iris remains deeply distrustful after Bella's confession. 35 38 40
- Caven — A village boy who considers Bella clumsy but good-hearted. He and the other children continue caring for the flowers at her abandoned home. 38 39
- Unnamed Mind Mage — Bella's creator, who manufactured her as an embodiment of malice and repeatedly manipulated her emotional development for an experiment. 41 42
- Assigned “parents” and villagers — Experimental constructs made to act with extreme goodness; Bella identifies the couple as her parents and later claims to have led them to their deaths. 39 41 42
Story Role / Major Arcs
*Pursuit, Void Bubble*
Bella appears after Linton defeats the Gloomy Shadow and asks him to take her home, triggering the World Quest Pursuit, Void Bubble. 35
Linton, Iris, and Bella investigate her village, where the residents display unnatural forgiveness and cannot perceive Bella's spirit form. The group finds Bella's former home, where local children have continued tending her flowers. 36 37 38
Bella confesses to causing seventeen deaths, but Linton identifies the village's extreme kindness as equally unnatural. He concludes that neither Bella's malice nor the villagers' goodness developed naturally. 39 40
The mage's notes reveal that Bella and the village were failed emotional experiments. As Bella collapses over the revelation that she is artificial and “not human,” Linton insists that her essence is formed through her choices and experiences rather than her origin. 41 42
Bella accepts her desire to be good and dissolves into starlight after Linton renews his promise to take her home. Completion of the World Quest grants Linton experience, gold, and Karmas' Trading Tools (Fake). 42 44
