Xiao Xiao is quick to empathize with people caught in conflicts far beyond their control. She weeps for a deity who damages his own body to save a world, and for gentle goddesses forced into war 38 49. She also challenges Xu Sanshi’s dismissal of noncombat work, arguing that planning a nation’s future and comforting its people after war require effort 100.

Her sympathy does not keep her from questioning difficult choices. When Mei leaves Kiana to seek a way to save her, Xiao Xiao asks why the two could not face the problem together; after learning more about Mei’s sacrifice, she recognizes what Mei gave up 486 511.
