| Species/Race | Human |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Karasuno High School Volleyball Club |
| Occupation/Role | First-year attacker; Karasuno’s No. 10 171 172 |
| Status | Active 234 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 10 |
Background
Hinata trains intensively with Kageyama before formally joining Karasuno’s volleyball club. Their initial quick attack is extremely fast but unreliable, as Hinata must swing before seeing the set and their errors cost them during the entry 3-on-3 match 10 13 19.
He initially struggles with the pressure of official competition. Before Karasuno’s early match against Aoba Johsai, anxiety drives him to the restroom; once on court, he collides with teammates, mistimes blocks, and interferes with defensive coverage 33 35. Despite this, he continues to run attacks without hesitation and gradually becomes more comfortable being the focus of the opposing block 37 96.
Hinata’s own experience of being blocked because of his height lets him empathize with Azumane Asahi’s fear of high blocks. He urges Asahi to return to the team, explaining that Kageyama’s sets have given him a way to fight despite his shortcomings 55.
Appearance
Hinata is a short, orange-haired first-year whose small frame is frequently underestimated by opponents. His height contrasts sharply with his exceptional jump, allowing his face and hands to rise unexpectedly above the net 35 62.
- Messy orange hair 16 172
- Brown eyes 172
- Karasuno’s No. 10 jersey 171
- Compact build and unusually high vertical jump 62 171
Personality
Hinata is loud, instinctive, and intensely competitive. He treats even trivial setbacks—such as losing out on meat buns—as a challenge to Karasuno’s pride, and he responds to opponents watching him with excitement rather than caution 46 96.
His confidence is not constant. High-stakes matches can leave him trembling, nauseated, or fleeing to the restroom, particularly when he fears being a liability to the team 34 35 172. When directly challenged, however, he can abruptly overcome that fear and state his goal with striking clarity: Karasuno will reach nationals 172.
Hinata is also earnest toward his teammates. He recognizes Asahi’s insecurity, worries about Nishinoya’s conflict with him, and steps between Karasuno’s managers and older students despite being visibly afraid himself 54 55 186.
Abilities & Skills
Monster Quick Attack
Hinata’s signature attack combines his explosive approach with Kageyama’s extremely fast, precise sets. In its original form, Hinata closes his eyes and commits fully to the predetermined point of contact.
- Overwhelms blockers before they can form a complete block 16 38 81
- Depends on near-total trust in Kageyama’s set placement 18 74
- Can be contained by blockers who match Hinata’s speed, such as Inuoka, or by opponents who read the set path, such as Tendō 76 238
- Becomes more demanding after the Tokyo expedition, as Kageyama adds forward momentum that forces Hinata to accelerate in mid-air 170
See-the-Ball Spike
Against Nekoma, Hinata begins learning to keep his eyes open during the quick attack. This allows him to see the block and alter his contact rather than functioning solely as the endpoint of Kageyama’s set.
- First attempt only grazes the ball and falls back onto Karasuno’s court, but confirms he can match the altered rhythm 79
- Gives him the foundation to vary his attacks instead of always hitting a straightforward spike 78 79
- Lets him exploit an unguarded court rather than blindly forcing power through a block 112 202
Speed and Jumping
Hinata’s acceleration and vertical leap are his defining physical advantages. He can launch without a full approach and reach a blocking height that surprises taller opponents.
- Reaches Asahi’s hitting zone at the net despite his smaller build 62
- Runs relentlessly as a decoy, stretching an opponent’s blocking formation across the court 76 97
- Can score before slower blockers, including Hyakuzawa, complete their reaction 181 208
- His height remains a disadvantage in direct blocking contests and against taller attackers 62 112
Decoy Play
Hinata’s constant movement draws blockers toward him, creating attacking lanes for Karasuno’s other spikers.
- Date Tech commits multiple blockers to Hinata, opening a clear back-row route for Asahi 96 97
- Works as both a genuine scoring threat and a false target in Karasuno’s multi-point offense 112 156
- He takes pride in being targeted by blockers and regards being ignored as an insult to his offensive value 96 202
Instinctive Court Sense
Hinata relies more on immediate perception than analysis. This instinct can make him difficult to predict and helps him react in chaotic rallies.
- Follows Lu Ren’s instruction to run toward open space during an opportunity ball, enabling a successful spike 121
- Predicts Tendō’s attack and makes an unexpected defensive save against Shiratorizawa 234
- His instincts can also lead to uncontrolled receives, collisions, and poor positioning when he focuses only on attacking 35 156 186
Drop Shot
Hinata develops a soft touch to punish blockers who expect his full-power spike.
- Uses a drop shot over Hyakuzawa’s hands and into the space behind him 178
- Counters Johzenji’s decision to leave him unblocked and wait in the back row 202
Receiving and Serving
Hinata’s defense and serve are initially major weaknesses, though training gradually improves his reception.
- His early receives are wild and often send the ball off-target 20 68
- Fear from a ghost-story session unexpectedly sharpens his focus and improves his receiving during training 71
- His serve remains weak and unreliable, described as a random threat even by his teammates 81
- He is criticized for his receive form after later matches, showing that defense remains an ongoing weakness 106 186
Relationships
- Kageyama Tobio — Hinata’s setter, rival, and quick-attack partner. Their synchronization is built on Kageyama’s exact sets and Hinata’s willingness to trust them completely, though they frequently argue and insult each other during training 16 64 170.
- Azumane Asahi — Hinata encourages Asahi to return after understanding his fear of high blocks; Asahi later sees Hinata’s speed and jump as evidence that Karasuno can keep fighting 55 60 62.
- Nishinoya Yū — Hinata eagerly asks Nishinoya to teach him techniques and chases after him when he leaves the gym upset over Asahi 49 54.
- Sawamura Daichi — Karasuno’s captain supports Hinata through his nerves and repeatedly steadies the team around him 35 44.
- Tsukishima Kei — A teammate who regularly mocks Hinata’s mistakes and impulsiveness; Hinata nevertheless insists that everyone on the same side of the net is a teammate 36 42.
- Tanaka Ryūnosuke — An enthusiastic senior who celebrates Hinata’s quick attacks and backs his role as Karasuno’s aggressive attacker, though his blunt warnings also worsen Hinata’s pre-match anxiety 16 34.
- Lu Ren — A teammate and tactical adviser who criticizes Hinata’s weaknesses while helping him use intuition, decoy movement, and varied attacks more effectively 106 121 156.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Club Entry and Early Quick Attack
Hinata and Kageyama are placed on the same side during the club-entry 3-on-3. Their quick attack proves devastating when it lands, but its low success rate and Hinata’s undeveloped fundamentals prevent them from winning consistently 13 16 19.
Aoba Johsai Match
Hinata’s fear of failure causes a severe early collapse against Aoba Johsai. He recovers enough to resume attacking, but the match exposes how easily pressure and weak receiving can compromise Karasuno’s offense 33 35 37.
Asahi’s Return and the Neighborhood Association Match
Hinata seeks out Asahi and uses his own frustration with being blocked to challenge the ace’s resignation. During the subsequent practice match, he faces Asahi directly at the net and demonstrates the jump that makes him a credible threat despite his height 55 62.
Nekoma Training Match
Nekoma’s defense and Inuoka’s speed shut down the Monster Quick Attack. Rather than simply attempting to run faster, Hinata begins learning to see the ball and the blockers, beginning the transition from a blind hitter into a more adaptable spiker 76 78 79.
Date Tech and Aoba Johsai Rematches
Hinata becomes Karasuno’s primary decoy against Date Tech, drawing enough attention for Asahi to score through an open lane. Against Aoba Johsai, he combines decoy movement and genuine attacks more effectively, including scoring through a deliberately disguised set 96 97 112.
Spring Tournament
Hinata enters the Spring High tournament determined to reach nationals despite recurring pre-game jitters. He adapts against Kadowaka’s towering Hyakuzawa with a drop shot, then helps Karasuno’s multi-point offense overwhelm slower defensive reactions 172 178 181 183.
Shiratorizawa Match
Against Shiratorizawa, Hinata makes an instinctive save against Tendō but later has his Monster Quick Attack read and blocked by Tendō at set point, showing that even Karasuno’s fastest attack can be defeated by exceptional intuition and timing 234 238.
Trivia
- Hinata is so focused on spiking that Lu Ren jokes his “Receive” program shuts down whenever his “Spike” program starts 186.
- His pre-game anxiety is repeatedly associated with stomach pain and restroom visits 33 172.
- Opposing players mistake his pale, stomach-ache-induced expression for intimidating “killing intent” before the tournament 171.
