Tanaka is already a member of Karasuno’s volleyball club when Lu Ren applies to join. He initially confronts Lu Ren at close range, warning him that volleyball is not a game for someone who intends to fool around; Lu Ren’s internal assessment labels him a high-attack, low-defense “Berserker” prone to overheating 2.

During the club’s first-year evaluation match, Tanaka forms Team A with Kageyama Tobio and Hinata Shōyō. Although usually boisterous, he recognizes that their offense is powerful while their defense is vulnerable, and gathers the two first-years to address the problem mid-match 13 15.
