Background

Tongtian resides at Biyou Palace, his Dharmic Seat in the chaos beyond the Thirty-Three Heavens. When Xuanming arrives with a token containing coordinates to another living world, Tongtian cannot calculate Xuanming's origins or future and becomes interested in the warning that another Intercepting Sect—and another Tongtian—exists elsewhere. He activates the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation to shield their conversation, verifies the coordinates with his divine sense, and personally enters the other world with Xuanming. 2 3

In the Journey to the West world, Tongtian discovers the fate of his alternate sect: Qiushou and Lingya have become Buddhist mounts, Duobao Daoist has become Tathagata, and the Intercepting Sect's surviving members have suffered persecution. The revelations drive him into a rage, though he restrains himself after recognizing Green Lion and White Elephant as former disciples. He learns that the Tongtian of that world was suppressed after being besieged by four Saints, including Taishang Laojun and Yuanshi Tianzun. 3 4

Refusing to accept that outcome, Tongtian breaks a restriction left by Yuanshi, reshapes Yunxiao's body, and resolves to avenge the disciples harmed in the future. He kills Golden-Winged Great Peng when the latter considers reporting him, then begins gathering Intercepting Sect members and planning retaliation against the Heavenly Court and Buddhism. 6

After returning to his own Primordial World with Journey to the West Tongtian and Nuwa, Tongtian confirms that his world exists before the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. At Zixiao Palace, he openly resists attempts to make the Intercepting Sect supply the Investiture of the Gods, confronting both his senior brothers and Hong Jun rather than accepting the future shown to him. 8 9 11 12

Tongtian later appoints Xuanming as Vice Sect Leader of the Intercepting Sect, gathers disciples at Golden Turtle Island, and eventually accepts Xuanming as his direct disciple. Under his leadership, the sect rebuilds its strength, gains multiple Saint-level allies, and launches a sustained campaign to eradicate Buddhism in the Journey to the West world. 26 29 41 42 45

Appearance

Tongtian is initially presented as an ordinary-looking Daoist in a grey robe, seated cross-legged beside a sea of clouds. His otherwise calm bearing changes sharply when his sect or disciples are threatened. 2 3

  • Grey-robed Daoist attire. 2
  • Sharp, intimidating gaze when questioning Xuanming or confronting enemies. 2 3
  • Usually composed, but his killing intent and aura can overwhelm nearby immortals when enraged. 3

Personality

Tongtian is decisive, proud, and intensely protective of the Intercepting Sect. Learning that his alternate self endured suppression and allowed disciples to be killed, enslaved, or defect, he rejects restraint as weakness and resolves to change the sect's fate through direct action. 6 9

He is quick-tempered and openly confrontational, especially toward Hong Jun, Yuanshi Tianzun, Taishang Laojun, Jieyin, and Zhunti. However, he becomes increasingly calculating after entering the other world: he conceals his aura, exploits Jieyin's temper to make him violate an agreement, and uses the confusion between timelines to pressure his enemies. 7 12 42 64

Despite his pride, Tongtian values Xuanming's judgment. He leaves the distribution of Primordial Violet Qi to Xuanming, elevates him to Vice Sect Leader, personally takes responsibility for his cultivation, and trusts him enough to spare Sun Wukong at his disciple's request. 19 26 41 53
