Background / History

In the Journey to the West world's future, Yuanshi was identified as one of the four Saints who besieged and suppressed Tongtian. Green Lion specifically named Yuanshi and Taishang as Tongtian's senior brothers among the attackers, making Yuanshi central to the Intercepting Sect's grievances. 4

Before the Investiture of the Gods calamity, Yuanshi attended Hong Jun's assembly at Zixiao Palace alongside Taishang and Tongtian. He supported Hong Jun's plan to re-establish the Heavenly Court, criticized the former Yao Race court's permissiveness, and favored strict oversight of the new order. 10 11

When the Investiture of the Gods was presented, Yuanshi maintained that the Heavenly Origin Sect had only a little more than a hundred elite disciples and endorsed Tongtian's sect taking responsibility for the Heavenly Court's god positions. 11

Personality

Yuanshi is proud, status-conscious, and quick to anger when challenged. Tongtian's refusal to defer to him at Zixiao Palace visibly unsettled him, while later confrontations repeatedly pushed him from verbal condemnation toward direct combat. 10 18

He is highly suspicious of unexpected threats but can still be swayed by the prospect of an Innate Supreme Treasure. While Taishang questioned the timing of a newly emerged treasure during the Heavenly Court crisis, Yuanshi openly struggled to resist investigating it. 22

Under severe pressure, Yuanshi prioritizes survival. After Bi Xiao's accusation and the collapse of his position, he attempted to flee the Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation; later, he rejected Old Ancestor Minghe's plea for aid rather than risk confronting Xuanming's backing and the strengthened Intercepting Sect. 76 77 114

Yuanshi supported the establishment of a new Heavenly Court under Hong Jun and argued for a more disciplined system than the former Yao Race regime. He then joined Taishang and Hong Jun in objecting to Tongtian monopolizing the Investiture of the Gods' positions. 10 11

Conflict with Tongtian and Buddhism

After Buddhism attacked the Heavenly Court, Yuanshi and Taishang confronted Tongtian over an alleged alliance with the Western Saints. Yuanshi escalated the dispute by summoning the Three Treasures Jade Ruyi and proposing a battle in chaos. 18

He later abandoned the Heavenly Court crisis to pursue a suspected Innate Supreme Treasure, only to encounter Jieyin and Zhunti. His attack on Buddhist forces deepened the conflict, and he was eventually put at a disadvantage against the two Western Saints. 22 24

Tongtian's Immortal-Slaying Sword Formation blocked his retreat, Hong Jun sealed the surrounding space, and Tongtian destroyed Yuanshi's physical body with the Four Immortal Slaying Swords before interrogating his captured true spirit. 76 77

Later Caution

After returning to Jade Void Palace, Yuanshi remained resentful of his defeat but did not challenge the Intercepting Sect again. When Old Ancestor Minghe sought his intervention against them, Yuanshi refused outright, citing the danger posed by Xuanming's unknown backing and the sect's Saint-level power. 91 114
