"No one had died?"
Hu Ma turned to Miss White Wine, making no attempt to hide the confusion in his heart.
The more people there were in a place, the more vibrantly alive it seemed. But with so many people, death was impossible to avoid.
The bustle and prosperity of Imperial Capital City surpassed Hu Ma's imagination. It had more people than all the prefectures he had visited before put together. But for that very reason, people ought to have been dying every day in a place like this, whether from illness or old age.
Yet no one had died in this city for a long time. Even those who had died were appearing in the city again. Just hearing about it felt deeply uncanny.
"People in Imperial Capital City still get sick, but they don't die. It's as though the name of Imperial Capital City has vanished from the Book of Life and Death."
Miss White Wine walked forward at an unhurried pace and said softly, "And those who died have started coming back to life, first the ones who died a few months ago, then the ones who died years ago. Just now, we saw a man who died twenty years ago come back to life."
She did not seem inclined to hide her presence at all. Instead, she walked straight ahead, using some kind of footwork that made her movements look relaxed and graceful as she drifted through the crowd.
Hu Ma focused his mind and quickly caught up with her. The two walked side by side through the broad streets of Imperial Capital City. Everywhere he looked, stiff faces swept past him.
The lively streets and jubilant faces now looked as though everyone had a mask slapped over their face.
