History

Dragonpit crisis and the succession dispute

Rhaenyra rushes to the Dragonpit after Jacaerys is wounded, finding a dagger lodged in his left eye. Her initial rage falls on Aemond, but she later learns that Lucerys drew the dagger first. Though conscience prevents her from treating Aemond as solely responsible, she accepts Daemon and Corlys’s argument that Jacaerys’s injury must be leveraged politically. 2 4

Before Viserys, Rhaenyra kneels and offers to treat the incident as an accident if he publicly establishes Jacaerys as first heir to the Iron Throne ahead of Aegon and Aemond. Otto urges an investigation, while Daemon pressures Viserys to decide; Rhaenyra’s appeal makes clear that she fears Jacaerys’s lost eye will be used to challenge his fitness to rule. 6 7

When Rhaenys proposes a settlement, Rhaenyra supports dissolving Jacaerys and Baela’s engagement and betrothing Jacaerys to Helaena, seeing the match as a means to strengthen her son’s disputed legitimacy. Marriage, legitimacy, and the Velaryon settlement

Rhaenyra’s marriage to Laenor Velaryon is politically necessary but emotionally distant. Laenor acknowledges that he cannot be the husband or father she needs, yet promises to remain the public father of Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey. Rhaenyra openly maintains that she does not regret choosing the life she wanted despite the rumors surrounding her sons’ birth. 12

From Dragonstone, Rhaenyra accepts an alliance with Valyria only after imposing terms requiring Valyrian forces to act first, continue supporting the Blacks, and avoid all contact with the Greens. She and Daemon later negotiate a Braavosi loan of 1,250,000 Gold Dragons to fund the war, offering Dragonstone’s mineral rights and future tax revenue as collateral. 74 79

News that Jacaerys and Joffrey have been killed and Lucerys has fallen into the sea devastates Rhaenyra. She briefly blames Mysaria for the operation, but regains control, acknowledges her own responsibility, and resolves to continue the war. 112

Queen of Tyrosh

After the Blacks take Tyrosh, Rhaenyra accepts the title of Queen of Tyrosh while remaining committed to reclaiming the Iron Throne. She is wary of allowing the new title to sever her remaining Westerosi support, and relies on dragonriders to preserve Tyrosh’s obedience. 121

She later learns that Lucerys survived with severe dragonfire injuries. In Tyrosh, she sets conditions for the future legitimacy of Jacaerys’s unborn child and accepts Nettles into her household after Daemon adopts the young dragonrider. 121 122

Alicent’s demand that Rhaenyra submit to Aegon, surrender Corlys, and accept blame for treason ends Rhaenyra’s willingness to retreat. Despite growing desertions in the Velaryon fleet and the fall of Tidepool Island, she chooses to return to Westeros and continue the offensive. 122 123 154

Return to Dragonstone

At Dragonfort, a Green envoy declares that Viserys named Aegon his heir before his death, accuses Rhaenyra of poisoning her father, and demands that she answer for her alleged crimes in King’s Landing. The envoy then presents the skulls of Jacaerys and Joffrey, confirming their deaths. Though Rhaenyra tries to attack him in grief and rage, Rhaenys restrains her; Rhaenyra ultimately honors guest right and sends him away with a promise that blood will be repaid with blood. 155 156

Rhaenyra mourns her sons in the Dragonfort sept and formally appears before her supporters as Queen Rhaenyra. When Lord Staunton requests aid against the Green advance on Rook’s Rest, she convenes her Small Council, orders reinforcements, permits Rhaenys to ride Meleys to war, and assigns Corlys to lead the fleet toward Crackclaw Bay. 176

Aemond subsequently attacks Dragonstone on Vhagar, destroying part of the Dragonfort and killing many of Rhaenyra’s loyal soldiers. Rhaenyra and her children survive by sheltering in the Dragonpit. She later rides Syrax into battle to defend Rhaenys against Lothron, but cannot prevent Aemond and Vhagar from killing Rhaenys and Meleys. 182 183 184

Fracturing alliances

Following Rhaenys’s death and the destruction at Dragonstone, Rhaenyra confronts a worsening military situation: the Hightower army advances with 26,000 soldiers, the Blacks can field only about 1,000 direct troops, and the Greens gain naval access through Dorne. 191

When Valyria offers aid against Braavos only in return for dragon support against the Braavosi fleet, Rhaenyra accepts Daemon’s proposal to seek an alliance with the Ironborn, promising them the Westerlands after the war. She also recognizes Sara’s infant son as her grandson, names him Jacaerys in memory of his father, and declares him House Velaryon’s legitimate heir with the right to claim a dragon. 192

Despite this concession, Sara later abandons the Blacks, fleeing east on Silverwing while leading Vermithor. Rhaenyra reacts with fury to the loss of the two dragons and the apparent betrayal. 206
