He married Alicent Hightower and fathered Aegon, Aemond, Daeron, Helaena, Isera, and Jaehaerys. Despite his desire for a united family, his marriage, his continued preference for Rhaenyra’s claim, and the competing ambitions of the Greens and Blacks left his household increasingly fractured. 144

Viserys’s health deteriorated steadily. Following the fight on Driftmark in which Jacaerys loses an eye, Viserys is torn between the accusations against Aemond and the demands of Rhaenyra and House Velaryon. He strikes Aemond in anger, briefly doubts his son’s guilt, and eventually collapses under the emotional and political pressure. 3

Viserys accepts Rhaenys’s settlement: Aemond retains Vhagar, while Helaena is betrothed to Jacaerys and Aegon is sent to Driftmark. The agreement is intended to preserve peace but intensifies the Greens’ resentment. 8 10

Succession Crisis

As disputes over Rhaenyra’s sons’ legitimacy escalate, Viserys continues to defend her publicly while privately struggling against the political consequences. Aemond’s arguments about bloodline, dragons, and male primogeniture force Viserys to confront the instability of Rhaenyra’s claim. 46 52

After Daemon proposes that Rhaenyra abandon the Iron Throne in exchange for expansion into the Eastern Continent, Viserys accepts the plan and names Aegon as Crown Prince. 90 92

Final Years and Death

Viserys becomes increasingly debilitated, drugged, and isolated in Maegor’s Hold. Alicent and Archmaester Orvel conceal the worsening war from him with a forged letter claiming that Rhaenyra and Daemon have accepted a peaceful settlement. 128

He briefly regains clarity to invest Aemond as Prince of Dragon’s Roost and arrange Aemond and Helaena’s marriage. 129 133 After learning of the dragon conflict and the deaths of Rhaenyra’s sons, he accepts Aemond’s belief that dragons must remain exclusively under Targaryen control. 143

On his deathbed, Viserys asks Aemond to avoid further kinslaying and, if possible, spare Rhaenyra. Aemond agrees only on the condition that their kin do not strike first, and gives no firm promise to spare Rhaenyra. 144

Viserys dies soon afterward from symptoms suggesting poison, prompting Aemond to lock down the Red Keep and begin a search for Orvel. 144

Posthumous Succession and Poisoning Accusations

Viserys’s body is laid in state in the Red Keep while Aemond and the Small Council investigate the suspected poisoning. 149 Aegon’s government subsequently declares that Viserys named Aegon heir before his death, crowns him Aegon II, and accuses Rhaenyra and the missing Archmaester Orvel of conspiring to murder the late king. 153 155
