After successfully passing the preliminary round, Xian He walked off the stage, rubbing his bruised left cheek as he went to collect his winnings at the gambling table.
"Son-in-law, are you alright?" Old Man Yun, a white towel draped over his shoulder, ambled over.
Before Xian He could reply, Old Man Yun pinched his chin, examining his left cheek.
"What kind of secret technique did you learn, kid? You were only hit with a Level 3 acupoint seal," Old Man Yun raised his eyebrows, his face full of surprise. "Don't move! I'll unseal the acupoints on your face!"
He formed a sword finger and poked Xian He's cheek a few times before releasing his iron-like grip.
Once the sealed acupoints were opened, the bruises on his face began to fade at a visible rate. Though Xian He couldn't see it, he could feel the numbness in his left cheek lessening.
"You know how to unseal acupoints?" Xian He asked, rubbing his face and looking in surprise at the scruffy Old Man Yun.
He had thought the old man only knew how to cook Wood Powder Porridge, never expecting him to have skills in unsealing acupoints.
"Can you..."
Before Xian He could finish, Old Man Yun interrupted him.
"No! Don't even think about it! My skills are not passed down to outsiders, nor to daughters. You can give up."
Xian He was baffled. "Old Man, I'm your son-in-law. A son-in-law is half a son. How can I be considered an outsider?"
"Stop talking. I will not teach you my skills." Old Man Yun's attitude was very firm. "However, if you and Yun Ling have a son, I might teach that little guy."
Who knows when that will be.
Old Man Yun sighed inwardly. Perhaps he would be underground, keeping his late wife company, before that child even grew up.
"It's a deal!" Hearing this, Xian He's face immediately broke into a wide grin.
In a little over a week, when Xian Dabao was thirteen or fourteen, he could have him come out and train with his maternal grandfather, saving him from being idle and bullying his younger siblings all day.
Old Man Yun shot Xian He a glare, not understanding why he was grinning foolishly. He couldn't help but pour cold water on his excitement. "Don't get happy too soon. Finish planting the crops first. Oh, right, when did you cultivate to White Obsidian level? Tell me the truth."
"If you don't teach me your skills, I won't tell you," Xian He replied. He then took out the gambling IOU from his pocket and strode towards the gambling table.
The dealer's face contorted in pain as he took out twenty thousand Copper Coins. This was a massive loss.
He should have known not to set the odds so high. Who could have imagined a Two-star Azure Obsidian could win!
After collecting his money, Xian He and Old Man Yun returned to the porridge shop.
After resting for about an hour, once the bruises on his face disappeared, Xian He bid farewell and left.
He circled back to the rear of the porridge shop, dug up the Mountain River Society Diagram from the ground, and headed straight for the slave market east of the Sky Fortune Tribe.
Twenty thousand Copper Coins could buy twenty female slaves.
The family now had an additional twenty-four mu of spirit fields, and they were in dire need of people to farm them.
"Grandma, I'll trouble you!"
Summoning Grandma Chen outside the slave market, the two sauntered in.
The black marketeer wasn't around today; perhaps he had gone to watch the Azure Light Competition.
"Young man, buying slaves again?"
The speaker was a slave merchant wearing a white headscarf. Qiuxiang had been bought from him.
The slaves White Merchant sold were generally thin and weak. Yesterday, he had promoted them by saying they ate little and worked much, which Xian He assumed was because they were starved from a young age.
Xian He nodded. "Do you offer discounts for bulk purchases?"
"How many do you want to buy?" The White Merchant's spirits lifted at this.
Xian He didn't answer directly and probed, "How about buying five and getting one free?"
"Let me consider it." The White Merchant narrowed his eyes, weighing the pros and cons.
His slaves were thin and weak, making them hard to sell. He had only sold one in the past week.
Instead of keeping them and wasting food, it was better to sell them off.
The White Merchant glanced around and leaned in to whisper in Xian He's ear, "I'll only sell to you, so don't tell anyone else."
"Okay!" Xian He nodded and signaled Grandma Chen to help pick out people.
After selecting six slaves who looked decent from the White Merchant, Xian He went to other merchants.
"Buy five, get one free?"
"No discount!"
"They offer you a discount and you don't, no wonder you can't sell. Let's go, Grandma. We'll go patronize the other guy's business."
"Wait, don't go! I'll give you a discount!"
After some negotiation, Xian He spent twenty thousand Copper Coins and finally bought twenty-four female slaves.
The sight of over twenty women leaving the slave market with him was truly spectacular.
The White Merchant couldn't help but grumble, "Good heavens, who's the slave merchant here!"
By the way, can he afford to keep so many slaves?
Leaving the slave market, Xian He ordered the female slaves to hold hands and, in one go, collected them and Grandma Chen into the Mountain River Society Diagram.
Back at the porridge shop, he reburied the Mountain River Society Diagram in its original spot, covered it with soil bricks, and then entered the Inner World.
The twenty-four female slaves were divided into three groups of eight. They were arranged to live in the guest rooms in the front courtyard of the quadrangle.
The female slaves in the east courtyard were managed by Chen Jingjing and Grandma Chen. The ones in the central courtyard were managed by Yun Ling and Muyang. The ones in the west courtyard were managed by Xiao Xue and Qiuxiang.
Qiuxiang was bought from the White Merchant, so having her manage female slaves who also came from him would make it easier to command respect.
