Background / History
Childhood in Meteor City
Sheila grew up alongside the Phantom Troupe’s future core members. She participated in their childhood dubbing group and was especially close to Sarasa and Pakunoda. Becoming a professional Hunter was a dream she shared with those two friends 122 175 177.
Sarasa’s murder left Sheila with lasting guilt. Although she knew accompanying Sarasa might not have prevented the killing, she regretted letting her return alone and wished she could at least have spared her friend a lonely death. Sheila continued investigating the murder for years 177.
As the Phantom Troupe became increasingly violent, Sheila distanced herself from its members. She hoped that finding Sarasa’s killers and resolving the grievance behind the Troupe’s formation might still change her childhood friends 175 176.
Connection to the Kurta Clan
During her travels, Sheila collapsed near the Kurta Clan’s settlement and was helped by Kurapika and Pyro. Kurapika remembered her as an enthusiastic but careless adventurer who frequently injured herself 175.
After learning of the Phantom Troupe’s plans, she attempted to warn the Kurta Clan to leave. She arrived after the massacre, reported it to police in a nearby town, and departed. Kurapika later accepted that she had tried to help rather than participated in the killings 123 175.
Flight from Meteor City
Sheila maintained contact with Shizuku and Gelman’s circle while fearing that the Phantom Troupe would discover those connections. An unexpected conversation with Pakunoda intensified that fear: Sheila knew Pakunoda’s memory-reading ability could expose what she knew if the right names were mentioned 175 177.
She fled Meteor City rather than risk discovery. Despite their childhood friendship, witnessing the Kurta massacre had made her uncertain whether the Troupe would still spare her 177.
Appearance
- Hair: Long hair 175.
- Head accessories: Ear-like ornaments decorated with heart patterns; later compared to Mickey Mouse ears 175 189.
- Injuries: Frequently appears scraped, bruised, or bandaged because of accidents and misfortune. When Kurapika finds her in Kakin, she is feverish, heavily bandaged, and smells of medicine 175 184 316.
- After the Meteor City battle: Has several bandages on her face 324.
Personality
Sheila is timid and would generally prefer to stay out of dangerous conflicts. News of the operation against Tserriednich makes her regret becoming involved, while the possibility of encountering Pakunoda influences her decision not to travel alone 184 192.
Her fear does not prevent her from helping others. Recognizing similarities between Kurapika’s grief for Pyro and her own grief for Sarasa, she volunteers assistance even while visibly trembling. She also returns to help Meteor City during its crisis 178 316.
She retains affection for her childhood friends without excusing their atrocities. She considers the Phantom Troupe’s crimes deserving of punishment and refuses to seek revenge against Gelman for killing its members, avoiding another cycle of hatred 176.
Abilities & Skills
Accumulated Good Fortune
Sheila’s Nen ability links recurring misfortune with favorable turns of events. She regards everyday bad luck as normal and becomes concerned when an entire day passes without an accident 184 190.
- Everyday misfortune: She trips over her own feet on an unobstructed street and scrapes her wrist 184.
- Interpretation of encounters: She attributes Beyond’s group finding her companions to “bad luck,” and Ging’s arrival to “good luck” 190.
- Combat limitation: The ability offers little apparent assistance during Meteor City’s direct fighting; repeated mishaps leave her bruised and muddy 316.
- Unspecified mechanics: The passages do not establish a precise exchange rate, activation procedure, or guaranteed outcome 184 190 316.
Scenery Hunting
- Searches for beautiful landscapes and turns her discoveries into travel guides 192.
- Recognizes Kite’s wilderness research as an opportunity to visit little-seen places with attractive scenery 192.
Investigation and Support
- Pursues information about Sarasa’s murder and the Phantom Troupe’s related investigations 176 177.
- Provides Kurapika with information identifying recipients of 35 pairs of Scarlet Eyes 178.
- Supplies information about Tserriednich’s social ball, helps with disguises, and drives the group’s escape vehicle 178 183.
Relationships
- Sarasa — One of her closest childhood friends. Sarasa’s murder drives Sheila’s long-running investigation and her hope of changing the Phantom Troupe 176 177.
- Pakunoda — Another close childhood friend. Their unexpected reunion provides useful information but also prompts Sheila to flee because of Pakunoda’s memory-reading ability 177.
- Chrollo Lucilfer — Childhood associate whose criminal path she rejects. After Meteor City is saved, Chrollo tells her that he does not blame her and thanks her for giving the city hope 122 176 324.
- Shizuku — A separate character and close contact. Shizuku recognizes Sheila when Kurapika brings her to camp and awkwardly comforts her during her account of Sarasa’s death 175 177.
- Kurapika — Former rescuer and later ally. He treats her injuries in Kakin; she helps locate his clansmen’s stolen eyes and supports the operation against Tserriednich 175 178 183.
- Pyro — Helped Sheila alongside Kurapika during her earlier journey near the Kurta settlement. Remembering him strengthens her sympathy for Kurapika 175 178.
- Gelman — Ally whose killing of her former friends leaves her conflicted. She neither excuses the Troupe nor seeks retaliation against him 175 176.
- Biscuit — Helps nurse Sheila through her fever, explains the group’s circumstances, and works with her on disguises 175 176 183.
- Kite — Accepts her interest in accompanying his wildlife research team; she chooses that journey instead of Greed Island 192.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Kakin Empire Investigation
Kurapika finds Sheila unconscious near a river and uses his Healing Thumb Chain to stabilize her. Gelman, Biscuit, and Shizuku help care for her until her fever breaks 175.
Once recovered, she explains that she came to Kakin to investigate Sarasa’s murder. Her account connects the Troupe’s search for the killers with its distribution of the Kurta Clan’s Scarlet Eyes to influential recipients 176 177.
- Gives Kurapika a list accounting for 35 pairs of Scarlet Eyes, leaving many still unaccounted for 178.
- Overcomes her reluctance and offers information about Tserriednich’s ball 178.
- Helps prepare disguises and drives the escape car after the mansion operation 183.
- Later leaves with Kite’s research team, both for professional opportunities and to avoid the danger of traveling alone 192.
Meteor City Crisis
Sheila returns to a devastated Meteor City and attempts to help despite her Nen ability’s poor usefulness in direct combat. Gelman, Shizuku, and Kurapika subsequently rescue her 316 317.
- Her pleas help persuade the group to intervene against the demons attacking Meteor City’s forces 318.
- She remains distressed by the possibility of witnessing more childhood friends die 317.
- Chrollo acknowledges her contribution to saving the city rather than condemning her choice 324.
- She remains a neutral, anxious participant in the final meeting between the surviving Troupe members and Gelman’s group 324.
Notable Quotes
“This was probably caused by my Nen ability—Accumulated Good Fortune. ‘Bad luck’ brought Beyond and the others, while ‘good luck’ brought you.” 190
“To be honest, although I may not look it, I’m a Scenery Hunter. I seek out beautiful landscapes and put together travel guides.” 192
Naming Notes
- The supplied context inconsistently renders Sheila (希拉) as “Shizuku.” Direct passages explicitly show Sheila and the glasses-wearing Shizuku as separate people, including when they share a camp and later sit in the same car 175 189.
- Evil Tenderfoot, the conjured vacuum cleaner, belongs to the other Shizuku—not Sheila. Sheila’s documented Nen ability is Accumulated Good Fortune 188 190 317.
