Background / History
Shiki was once renowned alongside Roger and Whitebeard. He competed with Roger for the title of Pirate King and nearly wiped out the Roger Pirates. His strength during that era is described as Emperor-level 119 121.
After Roger’s capture, Shiki stormed Marine Headquarters and fought Garp and Sengoku. Their battle destroyed nearly half of Marineford before he was defeated and imprisoned in Level 6 of Impel Down. He subsequently escaped, losing his legs in the process 119.
The loss diminished his strength and became a lifelong humiliation. After remaining hidden for more than a decade, he resurfaced seeking powerful allies and a way to regain his peak 121 162.
Appearance
- Long golden hair: Flutters around him while he flies and stands on end as he exerts himself 122 208.
- Missing legs during his early appearances: Fights using twin swords at his feet 119 120.
- Ship’s wheel lodged in his head: A former feature explicitly noted as removed when he returns in restored condition 208.
- Restored appearance: By Chapter 208, his legs have fully recovered and he carries two swords strapped to his back 208.
Personality
Shiki is proud of his legendary reputation and expects others to recognize his authority. He treats Luo Sa’s repeated refusal to submit as an affront, insisting that his own power stands above even a self-proclaimed god. When forced into cooperation, he preserves his dignity by presenting it as an elder helping Roger’s son 120 162.
His pursuit of renewed strength makes him coercive and opportunistic. Believing Luo Sa can absorb multiple Devil Fruits, he threatens him for the method and later raises it again when asked to help attack Impel Down 121 162.
Mila draws out a markedly gentler side of him. Over three years, he comes to regard her as his own daughter. His affection coexists with a strict teaching style, wounded pride when she praises Luo Sa’s instruction, and reluctance to admit how easily she persuades him 208 209.
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki uses the Float-Float Fruit to levitate himself and manipulate enormous objects, terrain, and bodies of water 119 123.
- Floating territories: Keeps multiple massive islands suspended above the White White Sea 119.
- Terrain manipulation: Lifts the ground and forms attacking stone lions 119.
- Water manipulation: Creates water lions, dragons, and a sphere capable of enclosing Luo Sa’s Fire Bird form 121 182 208.
- Large-scale transport: Flies the Windmill Pirates’ entire ship toward Sky Island 209.
- Battlefield control: Suspends incoming cannonballs and raises a wave to propel pirate ships toward Marineford 227.
- Island bombardment: Uses floating islands as weapons against Marine defenses and the Gate of Justice 226.
- Limits: Submersion causes the power sustaining his islands to dissipate. Luo Sa also breaks his attempt to halt their descent with Billion Ton Shockwave 122.
Twin-Sword Swordsmanship
Shiki remains a formidable swordsman despite his early physical impairment, producing powerful ranged Sword Qi and cutting through concentrated lightning 119 120.
| Technique | Documented effect |
|---|---|
| Lion’s Dance: Thousand Cut Valley | Releases successive waves of Sword Qi as an enclosing net; the strikes carve ravines into nearby ground 119. |
| Lion’s Might: Earth Roll | Used during his counterattack against Luo Sa’s large-scale lightning assault 120. |
| Heaven and Earth | Contributes to a massive clash whose aftermath reaches surrounding seas and islands 120. |
| Lion’s Roar — Ground Roll | Raises seawater into a lion-shaped attack against Shiryu, who cuts it apart 182. |
- His twin swords tear open Luo Sa’s Two Hundred Million Volts · Thunder God attack 120.
- He cuts apart his own water lion during his reunion with Luo Sa and Mila 209.
- He releases powerful Sword Intent before engaging Admiral Ryokugyu 227.
Armament Haki and Resilience
Shiki coats his body in Armament Haki to resist Luo Sa’s crushing Marill embrace and begins forcing the hold open 122.
- Survives being dragged into the White White Sea and splits the sea apart to emerge 122 123.
- The effort leaves him exhausted enough to retreat rather than resume the battle 123.
- Against Shiryu, his experienced eyesight helps him survive while his swordsmanship and Devil Fruit powers fail to secure an advantage 168.
Swordsmanship Instruction
Shiki trains Mila as his successor, teaching her the two-sword style that becomes her specialty 183 191.
- Mila combines his sword techniques with her innate Observation Haki to suppress Zoro in a duel 191.
- After joining the Windmill Pirates, Shiki takes over Luo Sa’s role as the crew’s harsh instructor 209.
Relationships
- Luo Sa — Begins as a recruitment target and source of coveted Devil Fruit knowledge. Their relationship becomes an uneasy alliance after Luo Sa defeats him directly, then develops into cooperation through Mila and opposition to the Marines 121 162 183 225.
- Mila — Disciple and intended successor. Shiki credits her with his recovery and comes to love her as his own daughter; she persuades him to join the Windmill Pirates 183 208 209.
- Roger — Former rival for the Pirate King title. Shiki attacks Marine Headquarters following Roger’s capture and later invokes his relationship with Roger while agreeing to help Luo Sa 119 162.
- Whitebeard — Contemporary from his legendary era. Their forces fight on the same side at Marineford, although Shiki explicitly denies that he is there to help Whitebeard 119 226.
- Garp and Sengoku — Defeated and captured Shiki during his earlier assault on Marineford. Sengoku later identifies him as a member of Luo Sa’s faction 119 225.
- Shiryu of the Rain — Opponent during both documented Impel Down operations. Shiryu pressures him into retreat during the first and pursues him after the successful jailbreak 168 182 183.
- Ryokugyu — Marine Admiral whom Shiki challenges during the Marineford war to announce his return 227 228.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Battle Above the White White Sea
Shiki encounters Luo Sa in Raikou form and attempts to recruit or subdue him. As Luo Sa switches from lightning to fire, Shiki concludes that he has absorbed a second Devil Fruit. He offers release in exchange for the method, hoping it will restore his peak strength, then traps the Fire Bird inside a growing water sphere 119 120 121.
Luo Sa escapes the trap through a Marill-form surprise attack, grabs Shiki, and drags him into the sea. Although Shiki splits the White White Sea and survives, he withdraws after exhausting himself. News spreads that the Fire Bird has defeated Golden Lion 122 123.
First Impel Down Rescue Attempt
Several months later, Luo Sa defeats Shiki head-on in Thunderbird form and demands his help rescuing Mila. Shiki warns that Magellan and Shiryu are each Admiral-level threats and again seeks the supposed method of absorbing another Devil Fruit 162.
He provides floating-island transport and fights Shiryu while Luo Sa confronts Magellan. Shiryu gains the advantage, and the operation ends in retreat 164 168.
Successful Jailbreak and Mila’s Apprenticeship
Luo Sa approaches Shiki again in Lucario form, claiming to act on the Spirit King’s commission. Shiki remains suspicious because Lucario uses a familiar Destruction Light Cannon, but continues the transaction 180.
During the renewed attack, Shiki fights Shiryu while Lucario battles Magellan. They escape with Mila and leave Shiryu behind. Shiki agrees to take Mila as his disciple, with Luo Sa requiring that her training occur on his territory 182 183.
Joining the Windmill Pirates
After three years of teaching Mila, Shiki finds her aboard the Windmill Pirates’ ship. His legs are restored and the wheel has been removed from his head. Mila blames Luo Sa for taking her away, prompting Shiki to test him with a colossal water lion 208 209.
Mila refuses to return to their old training arrangement and instead invites him to join the crew. He joins to continue teaching her, protests when Luo Sa assigns him helmsman duties, and nevertheless flies their ship to Sky Island 209.
Marineford War
Shiki is the first major pirate reinforcement to arrive before Ace’s execution, bringing the Flying Pirates and two floating islands. His apparent assault on the fortress draws Fujitora’s response, while his true target—the Gate of Justice—is destroyed, opening the way for Whitebeard’s allied fleet 225 226.
He stops Marine cannonballs, drives pirate ships forward on a huge wave, and clashes with Ryokugyu. The Admiral initially suppresses him, though their fight continues into the next stage of the battle 227 228.
After the pirates withdraw, Shiki appears beside Luo Sa and regrets the missed opportunity: he believes that a decisive joint attack with Whitebeard could have annihilated the Marines 234.
