Background / History

Konoha Career and Defection

Orochimaru was born and raised in Konoha, became one of the Sannin, and commanded village forces. Aburame Shibi served under him during the Second Shinobi World War and witnessed his actions during the Third. His command responsibilities gave him detailed knowledge of Konoha’s bloodlines and secret clan techniques 194.

He also worked with Root, nominally as Danzō’s subordinate. Orochimaru describes their arrangement as cooperation rather than genuine obedience; Hiruzen prevented Danzō from placing a cursed seal on him 436.

His experimentation on fellow villagers was exposed, making his continued residence untenable. The narrative also establishes that he already wanted to leave Konoha. After defecting, he retained informants inside the village and continued cooperating with Danzō 135 253.

Encounter with Shisui

Danzō’s downfall, Hiruzen’s removal from office, and reports of a “crimson skeletal giant” renewed Orochimaru’s interest in the Uchiha. Records in Tobirama’s notes helped him connect those reports to the Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo 135.

In the Land of Water, he encountered Shisui at a small restaurant and pursued him to the coast. Shisui’s speed and clone techniques forced Orochimaru to take the fight seriously. Although Orochimaru escaped Shisui’s binding genjutsu, he suffered a serious injury and left Kimimaro behind to cover his retreat 135 136 138.

Shisui subsequently recognized a problem with Orochimaru’s soul as a weakness he could have exploited earlier. The encounter nevertheless intensified Orochimaru’s desire for the Sharingan, convincing him that Uchiha bodies were exceptionally suitable vessels 146 190.

Trading with Sōken

Sōken initially sought Orochimaru as a possible means of eliminating Hiruzen without directly implicating the Uchiha, but Akitaro failed to locate him in the Land of Fields 72.

During the Konoha–Cloud conflict, Orochimaru infiltrated the battlefield in search of a powerful vessel. A Shadow Clone overwhelmed Shibi’s four-jōnin team and used the encounter to draw Sōken into negotiations. Orochimaru offered Sage of Six Paths tools for Kimimaro, but Sōken refused to return either the boy or Shisui’s captured Kusanagi sword 190 194.

Their eventual transaction exchanged the Bashōsen for information, including intelligence concerning the Rinnegan and Madara Uchiha’s possible survival. This first deal developed into limited, secret cooperation based on mutual benefit 195 251 303.

Akatsuki Membership and Intelligence Leaks

Orochimaru infiltrated Amegakure to investigate the Rinnegan. He fought Konan using three reincarnated Uchiha jōnin, then confronted Pain’s Animal Path. After Pain defeated him, he accepted Akatsuki membership to preserve his life and gain opportunities to seize the eyes 249 250 251 252.

Initially paired with Kakuzu, he was later reassigned to Sasori. Neither partnership established genuine loyalty to the organization: Orochimaru repeatedly sold Akatsuki intelligence to Sōken, becoming a valuable source for Konoha 252 303 329 331 353.

Abduction of Naruto and Sasuke

In the Land of Waves, Orochimaru persuaded Sasori to help capture Naruto, presenting the operation as an opportunity to obtain the Nine-Tails without attacking Konoha directly. He also claimed Sasuke as his personal spoils 353 355.

Orochimaru injured both boys with the extending Kusanagi sword and critically wounded Kakashi. He deliberately left Kakashi alive to report the attack, helping draw Konoha into a confrontation with Amegakure 354 355 356.

During the ensuing rescue operation, he assigned Haku to guard the captives and preserve valuable research subjects. Orochimaru and Sasori attempted to block Fugaku’s group with a snake swarm, but Shibi’s insects neutralized most of it, and Itachi’s Amaterasu forced them to retreat 364 371.

Rinnegan Theft and Death

Orochimaru observed the battle between Sōken and Pain under a concealment cloak. The apparent Orochimaru accompanying Sasori was exposed as a Shadow Clone when a large-scale impact destroyed it, leaving his real position concealed 379 392.

He then attacked Nagato in his Eight-Branches form. While Nagato concentrated on countering the regenerating serpent, Haku ambushed him, gouged out his eyes, and escaped with the Rinnegan 394.

Orochimaru refused to surrender the stolen eyes or accept Sōken’s offer to return to Konoha. Sōken seized control of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, brought Orochimaru within reach, and extracted his soul. The giant serpent collapsed into a lifeless White Scale Great Snake 396.

Revival and Captivity

Haku’s attempt to revive Orochimaru through Impure World Reincarnation failed. He investigated Orochimaru’s soul-related Heaven Cursed Seal and identified Anko as its surviving bearer. During the confrontation around Konoha, Haku used a Curse-Breaking Seal on her to attempt a reverse-summoning revival 408 432.

Orochimaru’s revival succeeded, but he was captured and escorted into Konoha. Because ordinary restraints were unreliable against his modified body, Sōken personally took him to a hidden research facility formerly used by Root 436.

Faced with the choice between cooperation and death, Orochimaru agreed to contribute to Konoha in exchange for continuing his research. Sōken retained him for his research-and-development value, warning that any further betrayal would exhaust his only chance at trust 436 437.

Appearance

Orochimaru’s usual humanoid appearance is pale and snake-like, with distinctive eye makeup and jewelry. His altered body can extend, shed, and replace itself during combat 136 354.

  • Eyes: Golden, vertically slit pupils 136 194.
  • Face and accessories: Pale skin, purple eyeshadow, and blue-green magatama-shaped earrings 136.
  • Voice and tongue: A hoarse voice and an unusually long tongue 136 194.
  • Serpentine body: His White Scale Great Snake has “scales” formed from masses of small white snakes 396.
  • Eight-Branches form: An enormous white snake with eight heads and eight tails 394.

Personality

Orochimaru pursues knowledge and immortality with an intensity that can outweigh immediate danger. While immobilized by Shisui’s genjutsu, his fascination with the Sharingan briefly overwhelms his fear of death. He is especially interested in techniques that expand his lifespan, improve his vessels, or expose unfamiliar powers 138 190 252.

His alliances are transactional. He joins Akatsuki without a psychological struggle, sells its intelligence, and ultimately attacks its leader for the Rinnegan. Yet he is not indiscriminately reckless: he recognizes superior opponents, avoids unnecessary fights, and accepts captivity when it offers survival and continued research 252 303 379 436.

He can be an attentive instructor while remaining exploitative. He clothes, educates, and praises Haku, but treats Kimimaro as a future vessel and Karin as a rare research subject whose bloodline must not be wasted 136 152 364.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

A body-transfer technique developed in pursuit of immortality, drawing heavily on Impure World Reincarnation and the Spirit Transformation Technique 190 250 379.

  • Requires suitable replacement bodies; Orochimaru seeks vessels with powerful bloodlines and secret techniques 190 250.
  • Makes Kimimaro a prospective vessel and the Sharingan-bearing Uchiha particularly desirable targets 136 190.
  • Requires him to change bodies every three years 379.
  • Remains imperfect and prevents him from using some techniques, including Spirit Transformation, despite understanding their principles 379.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru mastered Tobirama’s forbidden resurrection technique after recording its information from the Scroll of Seals 250.

  • Can summon dead shinobi using collected remains; complete corpses are unnecessary 250.
  • Deploys three Uchiha jōnin with three-tomoe Sharingan, regenerative bodies, and nearly inexhaustible chakra 250.
  • Suppresses their intelligence while retaining their combat instincts, allowing them to fight with little direct supervision 250 251.
  • Uses their Fire Release to counter Konan’s paper techniques and intervenes to prevent their sealing 250.
  • Their resilience does not make them invulnerable to Pain’s Rinnegan abilities 251.

Snake Summoning and Shadow Many Snake Hands

Orochimaru summons snakes from Ryūchi Cave for battlefield control, direct attacks, and interference with enemy techniques 136 194 371.

  • Uses burrowing giant snakes to force hidden opponents out of the ground 136.
  • Shadow Many Snake Hands releases intelligent snakes from his sleeve, dividing intimidation, restraint, capture, and biting among them 136.
  • Uses small snakes to intercept Yamanaka mind techniques and a covering of snakes to deny Gentle Fist openings 194.
  • Can summon a dense “Snake Disaster” ranging from finger-thick snakes to serpents large enough to coil around buildings 371.
  • Usually avoids Manda because of his arrogance, savagery, and troublesome demands, preferring more obedient snakes 136.
  • Snake swarms can be countered by specialized insects, while Sharingan-assisted swordsmanship can dismantle Shadow Many Snake Hands 136 371.

Clones, Substitution, and Body Replacement

Orochimaru uses multiple kinds of doubles and replacement bodies to obscure his real location and survive apparently fatal attacks 136 137 249 354 392.

  • Snake Clone Technique: Resembles Shisui’s summoned-animal clone method and makes locating his true body difficult 136.
  • Shadow Clones: A single clone overwhelms four Konoha jōnin; another deceives Sasori during the Amegakure battle 194 392.
  • Mud-like double: Escapes Konan’s paper enclosure by collapsing into earth 249.
  • Body shedding: Emerges from his own mouth in a fresh body after allowing Kakashi’s attack to shred the old one 354.
  • His survivability is formidable but does not protect him from direct soul extraction 146 396.

Eight-Branches Technique

Transforms Orochimaru into an eight-headed, eight-tailed white serpent capable of sustaining enormous physical damage 394 396.

  • Regenerates large holes inflicted by the Demonic Statue’s lightning in less than two seconds 394.
  • Remains alive after Nagato’s Almighty Push crushes a humanoid body inside a serpent mouth 394.
  • Produces replaceable humanoid bodies from the serpent’s flesh and blood 396.
  • Orochimaru believes even total destruction of the serpent would not eliminate all his means of returning 396.
  • Sōken defeats the form by extracting its soul rather than exhausting its regeneration 396.

Combat Analysis and Elemental Ninjutsu

His military experience lets him identify enemy techniques and apply relatively simple ninjutsu with exceptional timing 136 194.

  • Recognizes the principles behind Shisui’s Bird Clone and correctly deduces that his real body is underground 136.
  • Uses C-rank Wind and Earth Release, snakes, and explosive tags to counter four different clan specialists 194.
  • Employs Wind Style: Vacuum Sphere against Kakashi and creates an Earth Release platform for an Akatsuki meeting 354 355.
  • His genjutsu countermeasures had worked against other Uchiha experts, but fail against Shisui’s binding illusion 138.

Research, Cursed Seals, and Intelligence

Orochimaru studies forbidden techniques, souls, bloodlines, and modified bodies while maintaining scattered bases and informants 250 303 396 436.

  • Develops cursed-seal technology through research on Jūgo 452.
  • Creates Earth Cursed Seals for subordinates such as Kidomaru 408.
  • Creates the more complex, soul-related Heaven Cursed Seal; Anko is the only recorded survivor of receiving it 408.
  • Leaves research materials that enable Haku to investigate his revival 408 432.
  • Retains access to much of Konoha’s less confidential intelligence, despite village purges, but cannot comprehensively track all five major villages 303.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi swords — Uses snake-mediated sword attacks, including an extending double-edged blade. Shisui’s original weapon is broken by one such attack; by the later negotiations, a captured Kusanagi sword belongs to Shisui 137 194.
  • Kusanagi Sword: Ruyi Blade / Nyoi-jin — Later uses an extending sword to injure Naruto, Sasuke, and Kakashi, and to attack Nagato 354 355 394.
  • Sage of Six Paths tools — Obtains tools after locating Ginkaku and Kinkaku’s burial site ahead of Shisui. Trades the Bashōsen to Sōken for intelligence 194 303.
  • Akatsuki ring — Receives a membership ring and uses it to participate in remote meetings with Pain 252 355.
  • Black concealment cloak — Personally develops a cloak for covert observation 379.
  • Multi-functional telescope — Attaches it to his right eye to observe the battle between Sōken and Pain 379.
  • Nagato’s Rinnegan — Acquired through Haku’s ambush. The eyes remain with Haku; Orochimaru is not shown transplanting them before his defeat 394 396 398.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher. Protects Orochimaru from Danzō’s cursed seal; Orochimaru later uses Hiruzen’s old investigation report to locate Ginkaku and Kinkaku’s burial site 194 436.
  • Shimura Danzō — Former Root superior and cooperative partner. Their connection continues after Orochimaru’s defection until Danzō falls 135 436.

  • Kimimaro — Disciple and intended vessel. Orochimaru values his body enough to keep him away from dangerous fighting and later negotiates for his return 136 194.
  • Haku — Student and devoted subordinate. Receives extensive training, steals the Rinnegan on Orochimaru’s orders, and works to revive him after his death 152 394 408 432.
  • Mitarashi Anko — Former disciple and sole recorded survivor of the Heaven Cursed Seal. Haku uses her seal to revive Orochimaru, leaving her severely weakened 408 432 436.
  • Pain / Nagato — Akatsuki leader and intended Rinnegan target. Defeats and recruits Orochimaru, then becomes the victim of his ambush 251 252 394.
  • Uchiha Obito — Suspicious Akatsuki associate. Orochimaru questions his Madara identity, later mocks him and refuses to return the stolen Rinnegan 250 329 396.
  • Kakuzu — First assigned Akatsuki mission partner 252.
  • Sasori — Later Akatsuki partner and hostile rival. Their conflicting approaches to eternal life produce mutual dislike rather than scientific camaraderie 329 353 379.
  • Hiruko — Former classmate and comrade whose rivalry with Orochimaru resurfaces when they meet in Konoha’s research base 436.
  • Jūgo — Research subject whose abilities underpin Orochimaru’s cursed-seal technology; returned to Konoha alongside him 436 452.
  • Karin — Subordinate whom Orochimaru considers especially valuable because of her rare Uzumaki bloodline 364.
