History

The Uchiha are among the oldest recorded shinobi families, though their own genealogy only reaches roughly nine centuries into the past. Sōken later identifies the clan's progenitor as Indra, who inherited Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki's “Sage Eyes.” The Sharingan ultimately originated from the God Tree through Kaguya, Hagoromo, and Indra. 183 441

After Madara Uchiha defected from Konoha, the clansmen who remained curtailed the clan head's formerly absolute authority. The elders gained power to intervene in major decisions and, with majority support, could replace a clan head. Hashirama Senju praised the Uchiha who refused to follow Madara, despite Tobirama Senju having proposed the clan's eradication. 16

The Second Hokage attached the clan to Konoha's Police Force, worsening its public image. Following the Nine-Tails' Rampage, the Third Hokage relocated the clan again to a remote northeastern district, physically separating the compound from the Police Force and deepening the clan's isolation. 15

By the beginning of the story, the clan is divided between those who support an armed coup and those who believe it would end in destruction. Sōken opposes the coup, arguing that the clan is weakened, internally divided, and being forced into a dead end by Konoha's leadership. 2 3 15

Sōken challenges Fugaku's leadership through an emergency Jonin assembly at Naka Shrine. After defeating opposition and impeaching Fugaku with the support of six elders, Sōken is installed as clan head. 21 23 26 28

Under Sōken, the Uchiha rally behind Konoha in conflicts against Root, Kirigakure, and Kumogakure. Their battlefield contributions significantly lessen the village's hostility toward the clan and help reverse the political decline that followed Madara's defection. 67 186 237 323

Leadership

The clan head is the highest authority in Uchiha affairs, but the position is checked by the elders due to reforms made after Madara's defection. A head who has not clearly betrayed the clan cannot be casually removed; replacement requires elder intervention and broad clan support. 16

Assemblies and Naka Shrine

Naka Shrine is an ancestral Uchiha structure preserved through the clan's relocations. Its secret chamber, accessed beneath the seventh tatami mat in the main hall, hosts emergency assemblies of the clan's Jonin. 21 317

The shrine safeguards the Uchiha stone tablet, an ancestral relic whose text becomes readable at progressively higher dōjutsu stages: Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan. The tablet was altered to mislead the clan, contributing to Madara's pursuit of the Moon Eye Plan. 317 441

Clan Character

The Uchiha place exceptional value on strength, pride, and martial achievement. Their Jonin readily mobilize in defense of the clan, and Sōken believes many clansmen respect authority proven through force more than rhetoric. 22 67

This reputation does not apply to every member. The clan includes elderly people, children, and civilians who never awaken the Sharingan or become shinobi. 1

Many Sharingan users also possess a strong appetite for battle; even normally gentle members such as Shisui can seek the excitement of an all-out fight. 167 187
