Kirk and Little Fatty had both bought quite a bit of disposable food. Little Fatty saw T-Dog get killed, let out a sorrowful cry, and opened fire wildly with his M16. Kirk took the chance to run over to Mori and used the [High Protein Potassium Injection]!
He had no idea if this precious recovery item could save the severely wounded Mori. But with their numbers dwindling with every fight, Mori's performance was crucial.
Mori opened his eyes, and his visible wounds began healing rapidly. It seemed the recovery items from the System could be used on Plot Characters.
Mori spotted T-Dog's head lying at the Walker King's feet, eyes wide with fury, and murderous intent blazed in his own gaze. T-Dog was his sworn enemy who'd cost him his right hand, yet now he'd died at the hands of a flesh-and-blood Monster. Mori couldn't quite name what he felt, but he had only one thought now—kill this Monster!
Mori barked orders for Guillermo and the other Gunners to keep firing, then slipped like a cat behind a steel pillar, hiding in the shadow the Walker couldn't see.
When the Walker King passed by, he sprang up, drove the blade on his right hand straight into the Walker's brain, and yanked and twisted violently!
The Walker King roared in agony! It grabbed Mori and yanked him off, and just as it was about to use that terrifying [Slaughter Tear] again, Mori let out a sudden roar. A flash of Light Green light streaked by, and a blade sank into the Walker's right hand.
The Walker's right hand exploded, flesh and blood flying everywhere!
Mori leaped down and struck again with that Light Green blade, driving it deep into the fat Walker's already battered right calf.
The fat Walker's right calf exploded once more, shreds of meat spraying out, exposing the ghastly white leg bone.
Kirk was utterly amazed. This muscle explosion move must be one of Mori's special skills, and it kept working wonders against the Walker King.
But using it clearly took a heavy toll on Mori. After landing, his face went pale, and he crouched on the ground, looking too drained even to stand and flee.
Kirk's heart raced. The Walker King had locked all its hatred onto Mori now. If he didn't do something, Mori, spent of strength, would only end up torn apart.
He charged forward, and when he was still five meters from the Walker King, he gulped down the [Stone Skin] potion he'd exchanged.
A sensation of ** surged up from his stomach.
"Why does this taste a bit like a McDonald's McSpicy Chicken Leg Burger? Could the principle behind Stone Skin be to pile on the additives until a person becomes as immortal as a chicken leg burger?" Kirk wondered.
Then his skin began to burn and sting, so painful it nearly brought tears to his eyes. Luckily, it didn't last long—his skin started cracking, callusing, and calcifying. Just as he was wondering if he'd bought the wrong thing and ended up with a [Petrification Spell] potion, doomed to stand in front of the Boss like an idiot, the System Prompt told him he'd successfully used the [Stone Skin] potion, and his Defense Power had increased by 30%.
Kirk felt as if he were wearing a suit of stone armor, his Action Speed dropping slightly. He lunged at the Walker King again.
The Walker King had already slapped the crouching, gasping Mori flying, and was trying to use [Savage Charge] to finish off this brute who'd hurt it so badly.
Kirk jumped to the Walker King's leg, and a flash of Light Blue blade light sliced through as he ruthlessly struck the Walker King's already bone-bared calf! This time, he aimed for the tendons. With Stone Skin boosting him, Kirk was going all out, circling the 2.4-meter-tall Walker King and hammering its right leg repeatedly.
Little Fatty and the others weren't idle either, keeping up the assault on the Walker King's big head.
If they all Focus Fired on the leg, they might accidentally hit Kirk. Better for everyone except accurate shooters like Guillermo, a well-known Plot Character, to aim for the head and draw its attention.
The Walker King was truly enraged. These little bugs were buzzing around annoyingly. It kicked out with its left foot, and Kirk, with a flash of instinct, dodged as nimbly as a cat, seizing the chance to drive a vicious straight stab into the Walker King's supporting right leg.
The Walker King finally lost its balance and crashed to the ground, the whole floor shaking like an earthquake.
Little Fatty and the surviving Gunners cheered in unison. They'd finally taken down this fat bastard.
"Fuck it! Let's all pile on!" Little Fatty spat bitterly. T-Dog had always treated him well, and his gruesome death had hit the otaku hard.
But the Walker King, weathering their Focus Fire, wobbled and tried to get back up.
Kirk's eyes went wild. As the Walker King crouched, still not upright, he bravely triggered his only Active Skill, [Throat Cut]: if the target fails a Toughness check, instant death. If it passes, it takes 4x lethal damage plus 30 points of bleeding.
The Walker King passed the Toughness check without breaking a sweat—with a physique like that, its Toughness couldn't be low. Still, it took massive damage, black blood spraying from its throat as it groaned in pain, both fat hands clutching its neck. Its whole heavy body lost balance again, toppling and hitting the ground.
Kirk didn't have time to check the battle log. He aimed at the fat Walker's neck again and used [Throat Cut]! Each use cost him 10 energy, and he could do it nine times in a row.
The Walker King couldn't dodge this time and took the skill damage again. But its murky little eyes flashed with a sinister glint as it grabbed a five-meter steel pillar with both hands and slammed it straight down!
Kirk took a hit to the head, a deafening roar in his ears as if a steel bar had fallen on him from a construction site. He spat out a mouthful of blood and collapsed.
The battle log showed this physical attack had dealt crushing damage again! Combined with the Walker King's raw strength for base damage, luckily there was no critical hit, but it still sent Kirk, whose overall defense had been stacked to 150%, into a severe injury state.
Kirk struggled to his feet, blood gushing cheerfully from his nose.
Eyes red, he roared and charged again, triggering [Throat Cut]!
Before he died, he'd damn well use up all nine of those Throat Cuts!
The Walker lay on the ground, unable to dodge, and could only watch its throat get slashed again. It tried to swat Kirk with its palm, but Kirk dodged and used Throat Cut once more!
Just then, Little Fatty ran over to Mori and used [Delicious Toast]. Mori stood up, saw Kirk going to town on the immobilized Walker, and a hint of approval flickered in his eyes. He licked his dagger (Little Fatty: Big Brother, you've got some taste—won't the Walker King's blood infect you?) and stalked coldly toward the roaring Walker King.
Master and apprentice began a merciless dissection of the Walker King, now unable to walk. Kirk hit it with one [Throat Cut] after another, Mori followed up with one [Explosion] after another, both having a blast.
The Walker King had entered a severe injury state and was truly furious. It suddenly pulled off a "rolling eighteen times on the spot," and Kirk and Mori's attacks missed.
A bad feeling crept back into Kirk's mind. Was this fat bastard going to pull some new trick? So many people had already died here.
But, as this book made clear from the start, blessings never come in pairs, and misfortunes never come alone. The fat bastard rolled over to a nearby culture tank, punched through the glass cylinder, and culture fluid splashed everywhere, gushing out. A half-human, half-something creature's corpse flowed out with the liquid. It looked like a human with a pair of bat wings, but its whole body was pitch-black as if scorched by fire. The Walker King let out a strange cry, grabbed the corpse, and started chowing down!
(Kirk was speechless. Big Brother, you've got some heavy tastes? Even this Batman is fair game?)
And the Walker King's injuries seemed to be slowly recovering.
Kirk and Little Fatty exchanged a glance: "Damn, that's just not fair." Little Fatty fumed, "Does it believe in Brother Chun to gain eternal life? Can it just revive on the spot with full health?"
(The Boss smiled without a word, thinking to himself, I've been eating vegetarian and chanting sutras for years, and I've been pretty lenient with you. Back in my hot-tempered days, if the Protagonist dared to take a potion, I'd reload the save right away.)
"Can't let it keep eating like this—open fire!" Kirk shouted.
Everyone turned their guns on the "Batman" the Walker King was devouring, blasting the corpse to pieces. The Walker King angrily tossed the corpse aside, its badly injured right calf having recovered a bit, and charged again with [Savage Charge]! Its hatred was now focused on Kirk, who'd stopped it from "taking its medicine."
Kirk hurried to dodge, but the fat bastard, after gnawing on that "Batman" corpse, had not only recovered some Health Points but even boosted its intelligence! After its [Savage Charge] passed, it barely had any recovery lag, jumped up, and plopped its big fat ass down from above! This move might have been a hidden skill or a mutation from eating the corpse—it had never used it before. If this one-ton Monster actually landed on Kirk, even if he survived, he'd be pinned and unable to escape, doomed to be eaten.
But Kirk was already caught in the whirlwind of force the fat bastard had kicked up, and this jump-and-sit move even had a locking effect within a certain range! He gritted his teeth so hard they nearly cracked, veins bulging, but his body still couldn't move an inch!
"It's over!" Kirk closed his eyes in despair. "Mom, Dad..."
He was suddenly shoved aside, and a black man's voice with a Spanish accent roared, "***! ***!" Then came a scream of agony!
Guillermo!
He'd arrived just in time, pushed Kirk clear, and ended up pinned beneath the fat zombie. The fat zombie itself was dazed from the impact of its own landing, grunting stupidly, its vacant expression belying the bloody bones and pool of blood beneath it—all that remained of Guillermo, the perpetually angry young man!
"Son of a bitch!" Kirk lunged forward, tears streaming. He had only one thought: either kill this fat bastard, or let the fat bastard kill him. There was no third option.
Now, he finally understood the brutal nature of the space, the meaning of survival. A living, breathing life had become a pile of warm, bloody flesh and bone in the span of a single second. Smiles, words, jokes, anger, laughter—all of it turned to eternal gray, never to return!
This wasn't a game! Not an online game! No respawning at full health on the spot. Dead was dead—a cold lump of meat, or chewed up and devoured by a monster.
Now, **od and Guillermo were dead. Several of the gunners were dead too, all at the hands of this fat zombie.
It had to die.
Kirk charged at the fat zombie again and drove the special forces soldier's dagger into the Walker King's right leg. The force of his hatred drove the blade deep into the bone, so deep it wouldn't come out for a while.
The fat zombie's wound suffered another heavy blow. Its howl was deafening as it grabbed Kirk.
"Don't you hurt my big brother!" The little fatty charged in with his steel shovel, smashing it against the zombie's arm. Kirk managed to break free. Now, the little fatty's instinctive fear had been washed away by anger and grief, leaving only madness and fury.
Mori also rushed to the zombie's right leg and unleashed his blade explosion skill again. The remaining gunners opened fire, pouring a storm of metal into the fat zombie's head.
But the vast gap in strength couldn't be bridged by courage alone.
Three minutes later, Kirk had been knocked into a Near Death state!
The little fatty was in Near Death too!
Mori was blasted into the iron door, his face covered in blood, unconscious—alive or dead unknown!
The other gunners were either smashed into pulp, crushed into paste, or eaten alive! Not one survived!
Of the ten who entered to complete this silver hidden Main Mission, seven were dead and three were in Near Death! They were practically wiped out!
