Abilities & Skills
Sand Veil
Sand Veil is Trapinch’s listed Ability. 10
- No specific activation or battle effect is documented in the available chapters.
Ground-Type Combat
Trapinch’s Ground typing makes it particularly effective against Electric-type opponents. It defeated Voltorb instantly with Earth Power, while Voltorb’s Electric-type attacks were ineffective against it. 11 12

Story Role / Major Arcs
Capture in the Spirit Primal Forest
Su Yi encountered Trapinch while searching the outer area of the Spirit Primal Forest. The System’s Good Luck Card led him to a rare Purple-Qualified specimen already possessing Crunch and Earth Power. 10
Trapinch initially relied on Stomp and Rock Tomb, but Frogadier used the surrounding rocks and repeated Water Pulse attacks to soften the ground beneath it. Once Trapinch’s feet sank into the weakened earth, Frogadier finished the battle with Water Pulse and Quick Attack, allowing Su Yi to capture it. 10
Early Team Battles
After joining Su Yi’s team, Trapinch defeated Voltorb with a single Earth Power and reached Lv. 21. Its performance also triggered the awakening of Rock Tomb. 11 12
It later fought alongside Combusken against a wounded but powerful Lv. 32 Ampharos. Trapinch’s Rock Tomb restrained the Ampharos, while Earth Power contributed to the finishing combination that brought the larger Pokémon down. 13
Training and Qualification Upgrade
During Su Yi’s extended cave training, Trapinch practiced combat awareness, physical instincts, and coordination with the rest of the team. Su Yi specifically assigned it to become more familiar with Groudon. 19
By the final phase of the Spirit Trial, Trapinch had reached Lv. 34 and Silver Qualification after receiving one of Su Yi’s Qualification Upgrade Cards. 23
Trial Championship and Evolution
Su Yi used Trapinch against Zhang Kuang’s Lv. 32 Machamp in a wagered battle. Trapinch avoided a direct confrontation by remaining underground with Dig, exploited the ground damaged by Machamp’s attacks, and trapped Machamp inside Rock Tomb. Rock Slide then shattered the enclosure before Earth Power delivered the final blow. 28 29
Trapinch reached Lv. 35 after the victory and evolved into Vibrava. Its new form gained the Dragon type and limited flight, while retaining its close bond with Su Yi. 29
Trivia
- Trapinch was described as an unusually rare find because of its Purple Qualification and early access to Crunch and Earth Power. 10
- Rock Tomb was awakened through the System even though the passage states it would not normally be available within Trapinch’s evolution line. 12
- Its victory over Machamp was the battle that immediately preceded its evolution into Vibrava. 29
- Su Yi considered Trapinch’s future Flygon form especially valuable because of its Dragon typing and flying capability. 10 29
