Background / History

Groudon is obtained when Su Yi’s system grants him a free guardian draw. Although Su Yi had hoped for a flying Legendary Pokémon, the roulette selects Groudon instead. In a special space, Su Yi uses a system-made Master Ball to complete the guardian binding; Groudon does not resist because of the system’s power. Its original guardian condition permits intervention only when Su Yi’s life is in danger. 1

Seeking access to Groudon’s strength outside emergencies, Su Yi bargains with it. He promises to help Groudon fly and give it an opportunity to defeat Kyogre, persuading the Legendary Pokémon to cooperate with him normally. Groudon is particularly affected by the prospect of settling its score with Kyogre and by the suggestion that it may one day fly. 2

Su Yi later uses a Size Control Card on Groudon, granting it a compact one-meter form. The change proves impractical on land because its immense weight is retained despite the reduced volume. Groudon nevertheless accepts the new ability after Su Yi reassures it that flying will follow. 9

During the Spirit Primal Forest trial, Groudon becomes Su Yi’s hidden safeguard. Its aura frightens a hostile Ampharos into reassessing Su Yi, alerts Su Yi to Raikou’s presence, and drives the level-70 Raikou away without Groudon leaving its Master Ball. 14 15

Su Yi fulfills his earlier promise by assigning Groudon the Levitate ability. Groudon immediately floats and roars in excitement, though the roar alerts the Pokémon League to an abnormal presence in the forest. 18

After being lured into the middle zone of the Spirit Primal Forest, the Zhang Family encounters Groudon in its full colossal form. Groudon’s pressure immobilizes or terrifies the family’s Pokémon; its Solar Beam incapacitates four Champion-level Pokémon in one strike, and its subsequent stomp destroys the Zhang contingent. Su Yi recalls Groudon before the arriving Wind King can confront it. 37 38 39

Appearance

Groudon is a colossal, fiery-red Legendary Pokémon whose full body is compared to a mountain or a structure forged from lava and immortal rock. Even in its one-meter form, its grayish-red body retains its original overwhelming mass. 1 9 38

  • Its normal form towers over Su Yi, making him appear “like an ant” by comparison. 1
  • Its fiery-red exterior resembles lava, while its full-scale body can dominate the forest skyline. 38
  • It can compress itself to one meter in height, but its unchanged weight cracks the earth beneath it. 9
  • When preparing for combat, its body expands from the miniature form into a colossal behemoth. 37
  • It can float at either reduced or full size after receiving Levitate. 18 19 38

Personality

Groudon is proud, competitive, and highly sensitive about its inability to fly. Su Yi successfully wins its cooperation by promising flight and a future chance to defeat Kyogre, two ambitions that consistently excite it. 2 19

It is eager for powerful battles and grows restless when confined in its Master Ball for too long. After gaining Levitate, it becomes especially eager to confront other Mythical Beasts and imagines impressing Kyogre and Rayquaza with its new mobility. 19 33 48

Despite its overwhelming presence, Groudon follows Su Yi’s instructions once their agreement is established. It learns to restrain its aura around Su Yi’s weaker Pokémon and accepts duties such as monitoring the surroundings during training. 19 20

Abilities & Skills

Legendary Pressure

Groudon can project an oppressive aura that overwhelms ordinary and high-level Pokémon alike.

  • A faint trace of its aura frightens a level-32 Ampharos and helps Su Yi resolve a misunderstanding. 14
  • From inside the Master Ball, its pressure removes Raikou’s intimidation of Su Yi and causes the level-70 Legendary Pokémon to flee. 15
  • When fully released, its aura suppresses Champion-level Braviary and leaves most weaker Pokémon unable to move. 38
  • Its aura must be restrained around Su Yi’s team, whose members tremble under the pressure. 19

Ground Affinity and Sensing

As a Ground-type “Creator of the Land,” Groudon can sense nearby conditions and direct Su Yi toward Ground-type Pokémon or possible threats. 9

  • It points Su Yi toward suitable Ground-type Pokémon in the outer Spirit Primal Forest. 9
  • It alerts Su Yi when something unusual, including a possible Legendary Pokémon, is nearby. 14
  • During cave training, it keeps powerful Pokémon above level 25 from approaching the group. 20
  • Su Yi assigns it to sense human trainers before confronting the Zhang Family. 37

Size Control

A system card allows Groudon to alter its physical size.

  • It may shrink to a minimum height of one meter or return to its original maximum size. 9
  • The ability changes volume but not weight, making its compact form dangerous to release on ordinary ground. 9
  • Groudon commonly remains in its miniature form when Su Yi needs to conceal it. 19 37

Levitate

Su Yi assigns Groudon the Levitate ability through an Ability Designation Card, fulfilling his promise that Groudon could fly. 18

  • It prevents Groudon from falling under its own immense weight. 18
  • Groudon can float while miniature or colossal. 19 38
  • The ability gives it aerial mobility without changing its size-control limitations. 18 38

Solar Beam and Physical Force

Groudon’s direct attacks vastly exceed the capabilities of Champion-level Pokémon.

  • Its Solar Beam defeats four Champion-level Pokémon simultaneously, leaving them unable to battle. 38
  • Su Yi specifically orders that the opposing Pokémon be incapacitated rather than killed. 38
  • Its stomp creates a world-shaking impact and leaves a footprint more than ten meters deep. 38 39
  • Groudon is depicted wielding the Cliff Sword while flying in the novel’s opening vision. 1

  • Rayquaza — Another intended future opponent; Groudon is eager to demonstrate that it can now fly. 1 19 48

  • Su Yi’s Pokémon — Groudon serves as an intimidating senior presence, though its uncontrolled aura frightens Frogadier, Combusken, Flaaffy, and Trapinch. 19
  • Zhang Family — Lured to Groudon by Su Yi; their Champion-level Pokémon are incapacitated before Groudon attacks the family directly. 37 38
  • Wind King — Arrives after sensing Groudon’s unleashed aura, but reaches the scene only after Groudon has been recalled. 38 39
