History
Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara ended the Warring States Era and established the ninja-village system. Hashirama distributed the Tailed Beasts in the hope that their destructive power would deter war. Peace did not endure after his death: the First, Second, and Third Shinobi World Wars followed 401.
The villages depended on paid missions to support their ninja. Konoha benefited from the Land of Fire’s resources and a comparatively large supply of missions, while desert-bound Sunagakure struggled with fewer missions and depleted reserves. Competition for resources, territory, and work remained a cause of conflict 172 210.
During the Third Shinobi World War, fighting between Konoha and Kumogakure expanded when Iwagakure attacked both the Land of Lightning and the Land of Fire. The prolonged Konoha–Iwagakure front devastated the smaller Lands of Rain and Grass, which became battlefields for larger powers 193 210.
Mai later proposed replacing the village system with a centralized Ninja Empire. The assembled leaders accepted his terms, and the five great villages reorganized under his rule. Konoha became the imperial capital; the former villages became cities within provinces. The Empire declared independence from the feudal nations and subsequently absorbed their territories 401 407.

Parallel planes
- Mai’s Ninja World is one plane within a larger world. Another plane has a separate timeline roughly twenty years behind his own; the two have no ordinary causal connection 409.
- The Dragon Vein beneath the ruins of Rōran carries space-time chakra capable of enabling travel between planes. Mai and his companions use it to reach the other Ninja World 401 410.
- In that parallel plane, Madara conquers the Ninja World and leaves it in ruins. Mai later fights him there near a vast God Tree 409 411.
