History

The Uchiha and Senju clans founded Konohagakure together. After Uchiha Madara defected and fought Senju Hashirama, the Uchiha remained loyal to Konoha while the Senju line supplied the next three Hokage. The clan subsequently lost its highest-level fighters and political influence. 331 368

Konoha assigned the clan control of the Military Police Force, but the Anbu steadily diminished the Police Force’s authority. This left the Uchiha politically marginalized despite their military strength, fostering resentment among many clan members. 71

Under Fugaku, the clan pursued a more moderate relationship with the Hokage faction. Fugaku considered Konoha too powerful to oppose directly, sought to reduce tensions, and earned trust across both moderate and radical elements of the clan. 7

Uchiha Mai’s rise substantially changed the clan’s position. His entry into the Anbu was the first by an Uchiha since Uchiha Kagami, and Fugaku treated it as a major opening for restoring clan influence within Konoha. 71 Hiruzen later appointed Mai captain of the newly created Fifth Anbu Division, giving him authority to recruit and organize his own forces. 147 149

Mai’s victories against Hanzo, the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, multiple Kage, and Uchiha Madara elevated the clan’s prestige across the Ninja World. Within the clan, Fugaku came to regard Mai as its practical future leader even before formally relinquishing authority. 247 270 350

During the Nine-Tails Rampage, Fugaku and Shisui both awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan while defending Konoha and the Uchiha compound. Shisui successfully drew the Nine-Tails away from civilians with Susanoo after Fugaku’s genjutsu proved insufficient to break Madara’s control. 389

Clan Structure

• Leadership eligibility — The Uchiha do not use the Hyūga-style main and branch family system. Any clansman with Sharingan, strength, and ability can compete for the clan-head position. 270
• Fugaku’s leadership — Fugaku serves as clan head for much of the story and later commands Konoha’s Imperial Security Department and Guard. 7 408
• Mai’s authority — Although initially not the formal clan head, Mai becomes the clan’s effective leader through military strength, political influence, and direct control of major Uchiha personnel. 247 350
• Military depth — Earlier in the story, the clan is stated to possess at least thirty to forty adults with Two- or Three-Tomoe Sharingan, representing a large pool of potential jōnin; many lack official ninja registration because they did not attend the Academy. 9
• Anbu integration — Mai’s Void Division recruits younger Uchiha into the Anbu, including Tekka, Shangfeng, Nairaku, Ruri, and Obito. Fugaku supports the program while limiting its initial scale to avoid an excessive Uchiha presence. 149

Bloodline and Combat Traits

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan’s defining kekkei genkai. Its normal development progresses through One-, Two-, and Three-Tomoe stages, improving perception and providing increasingly refined combat analysis. 12 24

• Enhances observation and reaction speed to the point that opponents can appear to move in slow motion. 12
• Allows users at higher tomoe stages to observe chakra flow and record another person’s movements as images within the eyes. 24
• Supports genjutsu, dynamic vision, motion analysis, and the copying of ninjutsu and taijutsu. 247
• Provides useful reconnaissance through chakra-signature observation, though it is generally inferior to the Byakugan for scouting. 56

Mangekyō Sharingan

The Mangekyō Sharingan is an exceptionally rare evolution above Three Tomoe; only around a dozen Uchiha are said to have awakened it throughout clan history. Its users gain Kage-level power, unique ocular abilities, and may awaken Susanoo. 304

• Fugaku awakens his Mangekyō through fear for Mikoto and infant Sasuke during the Nine-Tails attack. 389
• Shisui awakens his Mangekyō while protecting the clan and Konoha, immediately manifesting a second-stage Susanoo. 389
• Mai’s mutated Mangekyō grants Deep Learning, Knowledge Integration, and Micro-Innovation, allowing him to record, combine, and reproduce up to three personally witnessed techniques despite normal bloodline or chakra requirements. 286
• Mai’s Mangekyō also unlocks Susanoo, which becomes engraved into the user’s soul after awakening and can later be activated with ordinary chakra. 286

Fire Release

Fire Release is the clan’s traditional specialty. Uchiha Izuna’s annotated Fire Style True Interpretation is treated as an elite inheritance, and Fugaku lends it to Mai after recognizing his potential. 24

• Shurikenjutsu is a traditional Uchiha specialty, strengthened by the Sharingan’s ability to analyze trajectories and movement. 19
