Background and History

The North Sea Black Tortoise sacrificed himself to support the heavens and reincarnated into a human family surnamed Li. Li Qingxu accepted the newly born child as his first disciple, named him Li Beixuan, and designated him head of Xuanmen’s fourth generation 104 118. Beixuan refused Taiqing Laozi’s offer to guide him toward sainthood, choosing to remain with Li Qingxu 118 119.

At Jade Void Palace, Yuanshi Tianzun recognized Beixuan’s foundation and bestowed the Fan Tian Seal upon him. Beixuan later chose Li Qingxu’s self-created Dao One Golden Chapter over the Jade Purity Immortal Art and began cultivating at his master’s Daluo Mountain Dao Field 120 121 123.

At Li Qingxu’s direction, Beixuan investigated the human reincarnation of Fuxi. He initially tried to guide the child, but, concluding that Fuxi retained the former Demon Emperor’s arrogance, lured him to Lei Ze Abyss, where a lightning strike killed him. Nuwa subsequently accused Beixuan, and Li Qingxu defended his disciple 129 130 131 132.

Beixuan went on to create the Eight Trigrams, introduce fishing and hunting nets and early writing, and establish marriage rules and surnames. Elected the Human Race’s first Co-Lord under the title Heavenly Emperor, he helped unite its scattered tribes. After completing his mission, he passed the Co-Lord’s authority to Lieshan Shi and returned to Daluo Mountain 132 133.

Appearance

Beixuan is introduced as a bright-eyed child in purple robes. Later accounts depict him in a profound-yellow imperial robe as Heavenly Emperor, a purple-gold Dao robe in battle, and a green robe at Tongbai Mountain 118 133 141 168.

  • His natal Dao image takes the form of a purple-gold black tortoise 124.
  • Purple-gold Great Dao merit is visible around his aura 150.

Personality

Beixuan is steadfast in his commitments: he declined Taiqing Laozi’s offer without hesitation and consistently observes seniority and etiquette around Li Qingxu and his martial uncles 119 150 151. His loyalty to the Human Race shapes both his reforms as Heavenly Emperor and his decision to prevent Fuxi from taking that position 129 130 132 133.

Abilities and Skills

Black Tortoise Dao Image and Merit

His cultivation of the Dao One Golden Chapter produces a natal black tortoise image connected to his previous life 123 124.

  • The image appears above him as a purple-gold phantom 124.

Combat and Spatial Movement

Beixuan fights with sword intent, divine power, and the Fan Tian Seal 141 292.

  • He used the Fan Tian Seal to kill several Great Witches while his armor absorbed their attacks 141.
  • He can open a Gate of Space himself, rather than relying on Li Qingxu to transport him 170.

  • Wuzhiqi — recognized Beixuan as the reincarnation of a past benefactor and cooperated with him to relieve the East’s flooding 168 169.
  • Yao Ji — Dao Companion; Beixuan disclosed their relationship to Li Qingxu after they had been together for thousands of years 182.
  • Li Jiao, Li Jian, and Li Chan — his children, identified as Li Qingxu’s granddisciples 182 191 272.
