The figure Sylvanas had pursued at all costs was Kel'Thuzad. The cunning Lich had been hiding in the Mage Tower, watching everything unfold outside. When Malygos appeared and made his speech, Kel'Thuzad immediately realized something was wrong and prepared to slip away. But who could have guessed that Gothik, that fool, would summon Semu?
Semu's arrival threw Kel'Thuzad's escape plan into disarray. All he could do was watch as Naxxramas Necropolis, which he had poured so much effort into building, crumbled apart before his eyes.
As he watched, heartbroken, Kel'Thuzad was also filled with regret. Why had he handed Semu over to Gothik, that stubborn fool? How could he not understand such a simple truth as "hold your patience for a moment and the sea will calm; take one step back and the world will open up"?
If Gothik hadn't been busy directing Semu to hold Malygos off, Kel'Thuzad would have loved to go over and slap him, then grind that old face of his into the dirt.
With Naxxramas Necropolis in ruins, Kel'Thuzad seized his chance and slipped out of the Mage Tower, intending to flee far away. But he never imagined Sylvanas would be on his tail again.
Sylvanas had been ready to attack immediately, intending to kill the culprit with an arrow, but Soraka caught up and stopped her.
Sylvanas didn't know it, but Soraka did: Kel'Thuzad's phylactery, as a Lich, was in Arthas's hands. Even if the whole world turned against Arthas, Kel'Thuzad could never betray him. Arthas only had to lift a finger to take Kel'Thuzad's life with ease.
Even so, Kel'Thuzad's earlier potion had harmed the Scourge as well. That proved he must have either obtained his phylactery or found a way to survive without it.
