Baron Xilun listed the benefits one by one. Earl Elliot nodded along repeatedly. The general, who had long been known for his iron-fisted approach, took a deep breath and said, "You're right. I suppose I'm getting old."

"I never used to be so hesitant when dealing with things. Give it a few more years, and I'll probably have to go home and retire."

Then he looked at his subordinate with appreciation. "I expect you'll have to take over for me someday."

Baron Xilun was startled at first, then quickly waved his hands in denial. "You're still hale and hearty, sir. I have a lot to learn from you."

Everyone liked hearing nice things about themselves.

Although Earl Elliot put on an air of helplessness, he was delighted inside. The man knows how to read the room, he thought.

He cleared his throat and spoke with a deliberately worldly air. "Don't sell yourself short. If I get the chance to enter the Kingdom's central government, I'll strongly recommend you for Commander of the Eastern Military Region."

His meaning was perfectly clear, and his attempt to win Baron Xilun over was even more obvious.

Baron Xilun was secretly relieved he'd reacted quickly. If he'd looked pleased, he had no idea what sort of trouble he might have been given.

At the same time, he realized why the other man had become so hesitant in his dealings.

His Majesty Ferdinand was now determined to restore Hailan Province and revive the Kingdom of Arthur. If he succeeded, there would surely be sweeping changes in both the military and the government.

Being a provincial governor was certainly a fine position for now, but once His Majesty the King restored Hailan Province, he would undoubtedly launch sweeping military reforms to prevent anyone from again growing too
