Background / History

Ugly Slave is Ning Taiyi’s true eldest son, though his identity was concealed and he lived under the name “Ugly Slave.” Disfigured and unable to openly acknowledge the Ning family, he watched Ning Xuan grow up from afar while serving as the family’s hidden Celestial Master. Ning Taiyi explicitly tells Ning Xuan that Ugly Slave can be trusted and has never intended to harm him. 18 26

He became Celestial Master of Wangyue Prefecture and the surrounding nine counties and twenty-eight villages. He attributes his position to Ning Taiyi, but retains authority to make critical decisions for the family. When Ning Taiyi summons him away from Manfeng Mountain, Ugly Slave deliberately ignores the order under their prior agreement and continues acting according to circumstances. 18 25 26

Ning Taiyi assigns Ning Xuan to serve as Ugly Slave’s Daoist Boy for a month. Ugly Slave disguises Ning Xuan as “Qingfeng,” equips him with a bronze ghost mask and Daoist robes, then tests and guides him through dangerous encounters with beasts and demons. 18 19

During the Manfeng Mountain campaign, Ugly Slave fights beside Ning Xuan, uses his seal to suppress the Monkey Demon, and witnesses Ning Xuan survive a Celestial Master Seal before killing hostile cultivators and demons. Afterwards, he urges Ning Xuan to conceal his abnormal powers and warns him not to lose himself to fear or violence. 28 29

As Ning Xuan rises to prominence, Ugly Slave becomes the public stabilizing presence of Wangyue Prefecture and continues guarding General Anyuan’s manor.
