Background & History
Originally named Jiang Xin, Wang Xin possessed the Seven-Orifice Exquisite Heart, a rare physique that senses emotions and thoughts. She accompanied Xiao Mo after he took responsibility for protecting her, but he eventually left her at Kong Nian Temple so she could cultivate safely. Rather than give up on him, Jiang Xin waited for two days before asking Abbot Xu Jing to teach her Buddhism so that she could find Xiao Mo once she had grown up. 181 187
Xu Jing accepted her as Kong Nian Temple’s 975th disciple. Her ordination produced Buddhist clouds, Buddha light, a self-ringing temple bell, and the image of a flower-holding Buddha. Xu Jing gave her the Dharma name Wang Xin, combining “Wang” (“forget”) with her original “Xin” (“heart”). 187
Years later, Wang Xin attained the Golden Core Realm and contemplated the Buddha within her heart at Xu Jing’s instruction. After a month, she perceived that Buddha as a child resembling Xiao Mo, revealing how deeply he remained tied to her understanding of Buddhism. 200
Appearance
Wang Xin is a strikingly beautiful young woman whose sacred bearing discourages impure thoughts. Her clear black eyes and pale complexion are repeatedly noted as unusually pure; those meeting her often feel as if their thoughts are exposed before her. 165 293
- Initially wears a monk’s robe and keeps long dark hair reaching her waist. 165
- Shaves her head upon entering Kong Nian Temple. 187
- Her hair later regrows into countless black strands after her prolonged contemplation at the temple. 261
- Can appear in ordinary homespun clothing or a wig and long dress when concealing her Buddhist identity. 234 293
- Her shy reaction to Xiao Mo praising her appearance gives her visible confidence. 234
Personality
Wang Xin is compassionate, gentle, and unusually sincere. She opposes killing even when facing members of the Wangchuan Sect, arguing that someone who genuinely repents should be allowed to atone. Her compassion extends to animals; she apologizes to a rabbit after shaving it. 221 229
Despite her soft demeanor, she is exceptionally stubborn. She refuses to abandon Xiao Mo after he threatens her, follows him through the Western Regions despite danger, and remains determined to find him even after his death and reincarnation. 187 228 284
Her greatest internal conflict is between Buddhist duty and her attachment to Xiao Mo. She wants to save the Buddhist Sects and prevent Xiao Mo from becoming a demon, but cannot bring herself to kill him—even when he asks what she would choose if he threatened all sentient beings. 221 261 280

Reunion in Maple Leaf City

The Question at Buddha Demon Mountain

The Refused Path to Buddhahood
Xiao Mo transfers the Western Regions’ Qi luck and a path to Buddhahood to Wang Xin, then forces her to strike him with Ink Dye so that she may gain the merit needed to reach the Buddha Ancestor Realm. After his death, Wang Xin refuses the Heavenly Stairway, choosing instead to preserve and send his soul into reincarnation. 281 282
Search for Xiao Mo’s Reincarnation
Ten years after Xiao Mo’s death, Wang Xin leaves Kong Nian Temple to search for his reincarnation, declaring that she will find him even if he is only “a grain of fine sand” in the world. A thousand years later, she continues her search from a villa in the Zhou Kingdom’s Imperial Capital. 284 293
