| Yu — transplanted Main House Byakugan | 41 | Implants a stolen pair of Byakugan into himself; his chakra rises dramatically, and he appears to suppress the Caged Bird seal. |

| Yu — chakra recovery through Blue Chakra | 81 | Reclaims chakra from released wind and converts Zero-Tails’ accumulated dark chakra, restoring his reserves during battle. |
| Yu — Wind Release: Flow Force | 110 | Establishes the Twelve Primary Meridians framework and successfully tests the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, enhancing physical strength. |
| Yu — complete Wind Release: Chakra Mode | 120 | Controls all twelve Flow Force pathways and gains the upper hand against the Six-Tails. |
| Yu — Yang Release transformation | 132 | Increases his strength, speed, and size; absorbs the Chimera Beast’s chakra and produces a colossal Super Vacuum Blade. |

| Yu — Dojutsu: Ten Directions | 150 | Awakens an ocular technique that allows him to see the future. |

| Yu — Super Kage-level threshold | 161 | After confronting two jinchūriki, judges his conventional combat strength to have barely reached the threshold of Super Kage level. |
| Yu — first Tenseigan Chakra Mode | 161 162 | Blue flames envelop his body; regeneration, mental abilities, ocular power, and attraction–repulsion control improve. His eight attributes total 77. |
| Yu — extraordinary longevity | 201 | Examiners report that maintaining his current condition without further activity could theoretically allow immortality. |
| Yu — nature-integrating Sage Mode | 219 | Becomes a conduit for natural energy, gaining exceptional vitality, healing, chakra availability, and enhanced ninjutsu. |
| Hizashi — four Purple Byakugan fusion | 219 | Completes the fusion and gains immense Purple Chakra, but develops disturbing physical changes and predatory impulses. |
| Yu — expanded natural-energy perception | 222 | Sensory expansion improves bodily awareness and cognition; at fifteen kilometers, his processing speed increases severalfold. |
| Yu — Sage Art: Giant Tenseigan Chakra Mode | 237 | Links natural energy, Conversion, Yang Release, and the incomplete Giant Tenseigan; his chakra exceeds that of multiple Tailed Beasts combined. |
| Yu — Yin-Yang Seal; failed Six Paths breakthrough | 250 | Survives a nearly fatal Truth-Seeking Orb experiment and gains a six-attribute enhancement seal. Explicitly concludes that creating the orb did not make him a true Six Paths-level being. |
Background / History
Historical Hyuga Tenjin
According to Hyuga Natsu, successive Main Family heads adopted the name Hyuga Tenjin during periods of crisis. They abandoned their names, pasts, families, and personal desires to pursue ninja power and preserve the clan. Ritual scriptures suggest that several surviving Main Family branches descend from a Tenjin 51.
The identities and individual histories behind the shared name are absent from the clan’s scriptures and records. Natsu knows that the name existed, but cannot explain how its bearers fought or why they were considered the strongest 51.
Yu initially believed “Hyuga Tenjin” arose from an ambiguous translation of a description of a gifted Hyuga ninja. Natsu’s account establishes that, in this world, the clan actually has a historical tradition associated with the name 51.
Root’s Modern Heavenly Ninja
Danzō introduces “Heavenly Ninja” as the name of a new elite squad’s captain while watching the aftermath of Yu’s catastrophic battlefield attack. Yu’s identity as that captain is confirmed during the squad’s deployment to Green Reef 90 95.
The squad receives an S-rank assignment to infiltrate Kirigakure, assassinate Kaguya Washiro, and frame Elder Genji. The operation is intended to deepen Kirigakure’s internal divisions as part of Konoha’s Kirigakure Collapse Plan 95.
Bearers and Claimants
| Person or Group | Relationship to the Title | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Historical Main Family heads | Successive bearers of the Hyuga Tenjin name | Renounced their personal identities to protect the clan through crises 51. |
| Hyuga Yu | Confirmed modern Heavenly Ninja | Commands a Root squad under the codename; Danzō later publicly confirms his identity 95 141. |
| Hizashi Hyuga | Challenger seeking to become the sole Hyuga Heavenly Ninja | Challenges the Main House and demands a duel with Yu; attempts to claim exclusive authority at the clan ceremony 219 222. |
| Hyuga Natsu | Self-declared holder of the clan title | Announces that she defeated Hiashi and elder Takahiro before Hizashi did, then identifies Hizashi as the challenger 222. |
Heavenly Ninja Selection
- Venue and witnesses: The Hyuga reclaim a training ground leased to the Ninja Academy for the “Tennin Selection.” Invitations issued in Hiashi’s name bring Konoha’s clan leaders and departmental heads to witness the event 220.
- Traditional challenge: The expected process involves fighting six elders and then the clan head individually. Hizashi instead demands that Hiashi and the Main House attack him together 219.
- Hizashi’s claim: He argues that Main Family authority should return to the Heavenly Ninja and that there can be only one Hyuga Heavenly Ninja 222.
- Collapse of the ceremony: Hizashi kills eighteen Main House members—four elders and fourteen others—while increasingly influenced by the Purple Byakugan 222.
- Yu’s absence: Yu monitors events remotely rather than attending. He believes killing Hizashi prematurely would trigger a more destructive eruption of the unstable Giant Tenseigan fusion 222.
- Natsu’s intervention: Natsu arrives carrying the defeated Hiashi, claims precedence through her victories over him and Takahiro, and interrupts Hizashi’s declaration 222.
- Unresolved succession: The supplied account ends with Natsu asserting her claim; it does not establish a final adjudication of the contest 222.
Military and Political Significance
International Reputation
- Strategic deterrent: Yahiko interprets Yu’s deployment to the Land of Rain as a threat to repeat Kirigakure’s collapse there. Yu is surprised by the assumption that he intends to destroy the country 139.
- Capture target: Intelligence lists separate hundred-million-ryō bounties from the Fourth Raikage A and Karatachi Yagura. The bounty issuers require the Heavenly Ninja alive 128.
- Specialized enemy planning: Iwagakure mobilizes its strategists to counter Yu’s combat system, fearing that his continued growth could produce another God of Shinobi 151 154.
- Wartime protector: At Grass Wave Coast, Yu intercepts Jigen and the Lunar Ōtsutsuki above Konoha’s retreating troops, catching both attacks before their collision can devastate the force below 257 258.
Konoha’s Political Symbol
- Root succession: Danzō promotes Yu as his heir. Hiruzen considers a future in which Minato leads Konoha publicly while the Heavenly Ninja supports him from the shadows 143 186.
- Hokage candidacy: Root circulates reports of Yu’s victories, youth, and Fourth Hokage candidacy; his publicity briefly eclipses the Yellow Flash’s fame 175.
- Financial backing: Danzō builds an interest group around the title. Its confidence depends on the Heavenly Ninja appearing undefeated and capable of reaching the pinnacle of the Shinobi World 187.
- Managed public image: Yu’s return ceremony includes a crowd paid with bags of rice, meetings with financial backers’ representatives, and a planned Hokage Half-Sleeve presentation 188.
- Authority demonstrated: After Yu forces the Hyuga to kneel, witnesses reconsider claims that the Main House can control him. Clan representatives subsequently seek cooperation and positions within his expanding Root organization 190 191.
- Title versus formal rank: Despite this influence, Yu is still officially a Genin and an outer Root member when his return is announced 186.
