Background / History

Team Seven’s Formation

A student of the Third Hokage, Jiraiya had only recently returned to Konoha when he became the instructor of Uchiha Sen, Namikaze Minato, and Uzumaki Kushina. His assignment included protecting Kushina, the village’s future Jinchuriki, and observing Sen’s loyalty to Konoha 17.

With war approaching, Jiraiya privately decided that failing the three children would keep them out of combat. He challenged them to take two bells, claiming that the student left without one would return to the academy. Despite his superior strength, the students succeeded through a coordinated deception: Sen restrained and paralyzed him with disguised Lightning Release Clones while Minato seized the bells 17 18.

Jiraiya accepted all three and assessed their individual strengths. He recognized Minato’s aptitude for space-time techniques, advised Kushina to develop wide-area attacks, and praised Sen’s unusually broad repertoire. When Danzō portrayed Sen as dangerous and disloyal, Jiraiya openly disagreed, arguing that the boy cared about his teammates 19.

Conflict with Kirigakure

Jiraiya led Team Seven to the Fire–Water border as skirmishes intensified. During the journey, he taught them the Sensory Technique specifically to improve their chances against Kirigakure’s fog-based assassinations 20.

On their early missions, he fought Suikazan Fuguki while the students faced the accompanying Mist ninja. Samehada drained enough of his chakra to complicate a fight he otherwise believed he could win. Sen and Minato’s explosive-tag clones wounded Fuguki, who escaped after unleashing a massive Water Release attack 22 23.

A later reconnaissance mission became an ambush. Jūzō Biwa revealed that Danzō had supplied information about the squad and placed a bounty on Sen. Jiraiya summoned Gamabunta to help them escape, but Sen separated from the group to draw away pursuit. After Sen returned alive, Jiraiya promised to investigate the suspicious orders behind the mission 26 27 29.

During Konoha’s counteroffensive, Jiraiya coordinated island raids with Sen’s Uchiha force and supported the fighting on Lookout Island. He arranged Sen’s evacuation after the boy injured himself using the Eight Inner Gates, then later rushed to another battlefield with reinforcements in time to save him. Jiraiya and Orochimaru subsequently organized the defense against the surviving Mist ninja’s breakout 33 35 37 40 41.

Amegakure Assignment and Continued Teaching

After the Kirigakure campaign, Jiraiya received an S-rank assignment to Amegakure alongside Orochimaru and Tsunade. He reluctantly told Team Seven that he could no longer remain their Jonin instructor. Before leaving, he secured the Third Hokage’s promise that the children would receive two months to recover rather than immediately enter another major battlefield 42.

His instruction of Minato continued beyond that reassignment. Minato later announced that he had formally become Jiraiya’s student and was learning the Flying Thunder God Technique from him. The pair also conceived a version of the Rasengan before Sen presented Minato with a training scroll for it 81 94.

Confrontation with Sen

While teaching newly accepted students in Amegakure, Jiraiya infiltrated Sen’s outpost under the identity of Tayujirō. Sen recognized his familiar fighting style and exposed him after senjutsu chakra allowed him to escape a Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu 211 212.

Jiraiya tried to persuade Sen to abandon his opposition to Konoha’s high command. Their argument escalated into a senjutsu-versus-Susanoo confrontation, but Sen challenged his defense of leaders implicated in human experimentation. Minato’s resolve and Might Duy’s testimony undermined Jiraiya’s claim that Sen’s supporters had been coerced or misled 212.

Ultimately, Jiraiya dissipated his Big Ball Rasengan and abandoned the fight. He still asked Sen not to endanger Hiruzen’s life. Sen tacitly agreed, then asked whether one of Jiraiya’s Amegakure students was a red-haired boy named Nagato 212.

Appearance

Jiraiya is introduced as a young man with silver-white hair 17.

  • Wild white hair: Both a recognizable feature and a weapon used in his ninjutsu 212.
  • Red facial markings: Visible on his cheeks and deepen when he uses Frog Kata 212.
  • Sage Mode eyes: Turn gold with horizontal pupils during his confrontation with Sen 212.
  • Tayujirō disguise: Gives him rugged, square facial features that dissolve when he reveals his identity 212.

Personality

Jiraiya is theatrical, boastful, and eager to impress. He introduces himself with grand titles and a peace sign, flirts openly with Tsunade, and insists that the students only defeated “zero point one percent” of his strength even while recovering from their electrical trap. His lecherous reputation is also reflected in the system’s offered rewards of a “Lecherous Constitution” and his peeping memories 13 17 18 19.

Beneath that behavior, he is protective and attentive as a teacher. He initially tries to prevent his students from entering the war, identifies their individual talents, and gives practical advice rather than simply praising their victories. He also recognizes Sen’s efforts to protect inexperienced Uchiha while allowing them to gain combat experience 17 19 33.

His loyalty to Hiruzen creates a persistent conflict with his concern for Sen. He objects to Danzō’s treatment of the boy, yet continues reporting to the village leadership. When confronted with the high command’s abuses, he struggles to separate loyalty to Konoha from loyalty to his mentor. His eventual refusal to fight Sen to the death does not erase his wish to protect Hiruzen 19 29 212.

Abilities & Skills

Sage Mode and Senjutsu

Jiraiya uses natural energy to enhance his techniques and perception 212.

  • Escapes Sen’s Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu using senjutsu chakra.
  • Strengthens his hair-based attacks and defenses.
  • Senses the danger of Susanoo’s attacks well enough to evade them.
  • Remains vulnerable to Sen’s highly penetrating Lightning Release, which causes pain even through his enhanced defense.

Frog Kata and Taijutsu

His close combat combines considerable physical strength with refined chakra control 18 211 212.

  • Uses rapid punches, kicks, and Body Flicker to pressure multiple opponents.
  • Matches Sen’s Lightning Release-enhanced punch while disguised as Tayujirō.
  • Extends his striking range through natural-energy shock waves, allowing Frog Kata to injure opponents without direct contact.
  • Has his senjutsu shock wave dispersed by Sen’s Susanoo.

Hair-Based Ninjutsu

Jiraiya manipulates his hair for both ranged attacks and protection 22 212.

  • Ninja Art: Needle Jizo: Used to launch hair-formed senbon at Fuguki.
  • Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon: Fires a dense barrage of hardened, senjutsu-infused hair capable of piercing steel.
  • Senjutsu-enhanced Needle Jizo: Expands his hair around his body to block incoming attacks.

Summoning and Fire Release

Jiraiya summons Gamabunta of Mount Myōboku and coordinates large-scale attacks with him 27.

  • Toad Oil Flame Bullet: Ignites Gamabunta’s oil to create an extensive sea of flames.
  • Combines Fire Release with Sen’s flames against seawater to generate concealing steam.
  • Participates in Team Seven’s combined fire-and-wind attack during Jūzō’s ambush 26.
  • Recognizes shortcomings in his reconnaissance skills and resolves to learn more scouting techniques from the toads 27.

Rasengan

Jiraiya and Minato had already conceived a version of the Rasengan when Sen supplied Minato with a training scroll 94.

  • Sage Art: Big Ball Rasengan: Concentrates senjutsu into an enlarged Rasengan whose power astonishes Minato.
  • Dissipates the technique voluntarily when his confrontation with Sen loses its purpose; it is not released against him 212.

Earth Release, Sensing, and Instruction

Jiraiya’s repertoire includes movement, detection, and practical shinobi training 18 19 20.

  • Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu: Uses the ground to reposition behind Team Seven and launch a surprise attack 18.
  • Sensory Technique: Demonstrates ground-contact sensing and teaches it as a survival measure against Mist ninja 20.
  • Water Walking: Incorporates chakra-control practice into the team’s early work 19.
  • Space-time instruction: Recognizes Minato’s aptitude, trains his reactions, and later teaches him Flying Thunder God. These passages establish his role as an instructor, not that he personally uses Flying Thunder God 19 25 26 81.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kunai — Used to counter Sen’s swordsmanship and engage Fuguki at close range 18 22.
  • Two training bells — The objectives of Team Seven’s graduation test, worn at his waist 17 18.
  • Sensory Technique scroll — Used during the team’s journey to the border 20.
  • Sealing scroll — Given to Sen to conceal Samehada and avoid provoking immediate recognition by Mist ninja 33.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Sen — Student and later ideological opponent. Jiraiya defends his character against Danzō, but Sen remains wary that he will disclose sensitive information to Hiruzen. Their later duel ends without severing their teacher–student bond 19 37 212.
  • Namikaze Minato — Team Seven member and later formal disciple. Jiraiya prizes his kindness and space-time aptitude; Minato’s voluntary support for Sen deeply shakes him 26 81 212.
  • Uzumaki Kushina — Student and assigned protection target. Jiraiya regrets that the lively girl faces confinement as a Jinchuriki and encourages her development as a combatant 17 19.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Mentor and Third Hokage. Jiraiya’s attachment to him persists even after his willingness to fight Sen collapses 17 212.
  • Orochimaru — Longstanding comrade and fellow Sannin. They reunite at the border outpost, coordinate the Kirigakure campaign, and are assigned together to Amegakure 21 41 42.
  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and mission teammate. His flirtatious greeting receives an immediate rebuff when he arrives to meet Team Seven 17 42.
  • Gamabunta — Summoned ally who provides oil and battlefield support during the squad’s escape from Mist forces 27.
  • Might Duy — A shinobi whose sincerity Jiraiya trusts. Duy’s testimony that Sen’s followers chose their allegiance freely helps persuade him to stop fighting 212.

Trivia

  • The title “Jiraiya’s S-Rank Ninjutsu” refers to the students’ joke that his stubbornness must be his ultimate technique: even after being electrocuted, he refuses to admit how thoroughly they caught him 18.
  • His death at Nagato’s hands appears within a future illusion shown to Orochimaru. It is not an actual death in the documented storyline; Jiraiya later appears alive 176 212.
