Chapter 4: Big Beauty and Little Tsundere [Please Recommend]
After meeting those eyes, Toneri felt his hands and feet turn ice-cold in an instant, a numbness slowly creeping from his fingertips.
The air around his body was scorching hot, yet Toneri felt a chill from the depths of his heart, forcing an involuntary shiver.
Then, he could clearly sense a surge of deathly aura rising from within, slowly eroding his body, devouring his will, and planting an uncontrollable urge to die in his mind.
But just as this feeling was about to sweep through his entire body, it vanished without a trace.
He thought back to his past life on the battlefield. As a field medic, the one thing he could never do was accept that he was doomed to die. If he gave up, who would save the comrades fighting on the front lines?
So, the first thing Toneri learned after stepping onto the battlefield was to stay alive—only by surviving could he save others!
The eyes that had opened wide like lanterns flickered with a trace of confusion.
"Eh—"
The Two-Tails never expected that a brat with no Chakra at all could snap out of its Death Stare so quickly.
Though it was the Two-Tails, a tail didn't truly represent a Tailed Beast's strength. Its two eyes, different in color, were not meaningless. At their core, those eyes could see both the world of the living and the realm of the dead.
Even if it could only see those two realms without interfering, that was still not something a mere child without Chakra could withstand.
This was the Two-Tails' test for its new Jinchūriki. Only by resisting could he barely qualify to be its prison. Otherwise, a single glare would kill him...
Was that a joke?!
Slowly lowering itself, the Two-Tails lay back down on the ground.
Since it couldn't glare him to death, a little conversation was in order.
It wasn't that it didn't want to break free from the shackles of this seal. But when the container was being swapped, at the final moment, the previous Jinchūriki's heart had already shattered—he should have died long ago. The Two-Tails just didn't want to vanish along with him, so it used its own power to keep him alive, buying time to find a new vessel or else be released.
Even the final Sealing Jutsu had used some of its own Chakra.
That was why, after a whole day had passed, the Two-Tails hadn't summoned Toneri—it had been forced into a deep slumber.
Even now, it had only recovered a fraction of its strength.
But even that fraction was no excuse for Toneri to withstand the Two-Tails' Death Stare.
"Little one, your soul is strange. It doesn't seem to have much connection to this world's realms of the living and the dead? Though that bond is slowly forming, this situation should only appear in infants!" A voice that wasn't particularly sharp echoed through the space, thick with confusion.
Toneri even had the illusion that the source of this voice carried a hint of politeness in its words.
It was a very strange feeling, especially since, just moments ago, it had felt like it wanted him dead.
In the originally dim space, a wisp of blue light suddenly flickered on the other side of the bars. This flame gave off a chilling, eerie sensation, like ghost fire.
Then, a creature crouched on the ground came into view under the glow of the blue flame. Its fur bore markings like blue flames, two slender tails swayed behind it, and its eyes—different colors, each the size of a copper bell—stared at Toneri as it lay there.
What a huge cat!
That was the first thought that crossed Toneri's mind when he saw the Two-Tails' form.
In truth, calling this version of the Two-Tails a giant tiger with two tails wouldn't be wrong either.
So this was the legendary Two-Tails!
One of the powerful Tailed Beasts of this Ninja World!
"You... are the Two-Tails, right?"
Looking at this creature, massive as a mountain, Toneri couldn't help but ask.
"Hm? You know me?"
The Two-Tails narrowed its eyes slightly, looking down at this human who, even when it lay on the ground, was still below its eye level. Its gaze held a trace of doubt.
"Yeah."
Toneri nodded calmly, stepping a little closer. Just ahead lay the entrance to the cage, and inside was the territory of this terrifying beast radiating a dreadful aura. "Because that old man yesterday called you by name in front of me."
Hearing Toneri's words, the Two-Tails said thoughtfully, "You're a fairly clever little one."
"What's your name?"
Seeing Toneri, who didn't seem particularly afraid of it, the Two-Tails couldn't help but ask.
"Toneri! My name is Toneri!"
Toneri grinned, squinting his eyes, and flashed a very sunny smile, bringing a sliver of light into this dark space.
Seeing Toneri's childlike, pure smile, the Two-Tails froze.
How many years had it been since someone had shown it such a warm smile?
Everyone—every single person the Two-Tails had ever met—when they first saw it, when they learned its identity, they all showed expressions of shock, fear, or even terror.
Time and again, this had turned the once-gentle creature into the terrifying monster full of malice and evil that people expected, corroded by deathly aura.
Even its own Jinchūriki, including the previous one who had gotten along relatively well, was still filled with fear toward it. The only difference was that he hid it better.
"I told you my name. What's yours?" Toneri stared straight at the Two-Tails, waiting for its answer.
Snapping out of its useless, pointless musings, the Two-Tails' gaze toward Toneri turned icy cold again.
This little one was just better at hiding it.
"Two-Tails!" Two-Tails coldly spat out two words.
Friendliness, admiration, even recognition—these were nothing but hypocritical, useless things!
"Of course I know you're Two-Tails, but Two-Tails is your race, like Persian Cat, Garfield, Siamese Cat, and so on—those are all race names. What I'm asking is your real name." Toneri counted on his fingers, a playful impulse rising in his heart.
Although he had two people's memories in his head, and those two memories had completely merged, it didn't mean his original childlike nature had vanished entirely.
Moreover, in Toneri's view, no matter what he discussed with Two-Tails, as long as they were talking, more topics would inevitably emerge!
More topics meant more chances to interact!
Only then could he find an opening to strike at her weak points, only then...
"Hmph—" Two-Tails snorted coldly, staring at Toneri with icy eyes.
She was now one with Toneri. Though she couldn't read his thoughts, she had seen everything he did during the day. Now he was acting cute in front of her—in Two-Tails' view, there had to be some ulterior motive.
But Toneri acted as if he hadn't noticed Two-Tails' cold expression.
Resting his chin on his hand, he muttered to himself, "You're pretty good-looking, but your personality's a bit tsundere..."
Suddenly, Toneri's eyes lit up. He made a fist with his right hand and tapped it against his left palm. "What do you think—Big Beauty and Little Tsundere, which of those two names sounds better?"
"..."
