Background / History

Matatabi was Kumogakure's Two-Tails and one of the village's strategic Tailed Beast weapons. Compared with other Tailed Beasts, she was known for a relatively good temperament; her Jinchūriki could maintain a Tailed Beast Cloak without immediately losing their sanity. 7

She spent countless years sealed inside successive Jinchūriki, isolated in a dark sealing space and approached mostly by people seeking her power. When her prior Jinchūriki died during a transfer, she used her own chakra to keep him alive long enough for a new vessel to be found, leaving her severely weakened. She was then sealed into Toneri through an imperfect seal. 4 8 12

Initially, Matatabi considered using Toneri's weak seal to escape, but Toneri's fearlessness, persistence, and stated intention to give her freedom gradually changed her attitude. Their early interactions were contentious: she tested him with her Death Stare, while he repeatedly irritated her with cat stories and nicknames. 4 17 32

As Toneri strengthened his body, Matatabi began sharing chakra with him voluntarily. Their cooperation progressed from partial transformations to a summonable small clone, allowing her to experience the outside world through the clone's memories. 32 60 62 299

During the battle against Sunagakure, Toneri recognized that he had never fully accepted the pain and hatred within her chakra. After he embraced her without reservation, Matatabi entrusted him with her true name and enabled their near-perfect synchronization. 121

Appearance

Matatabi is an enormous blue-and-black feline Tailed Beast, described as mountain- or small-hill-sized in her true form. Her most distinctive feature is her heterochromatic gaze: one eye is blue and the other yellow. 32 316

Personality

Matatabi is comparatively calm and rational for a Tailed Beast, though she remains proud, sharp-tongued, and easily annoyed by Toneri's teasing. She initially treats him as an unreliable child and resists his petting and nicknames, but gradually accepts his companionship. 5 32 40 62

Her gentleness does not mean passivity. She is wary of dangerous power, questions Toneri when he demands all of her Yin-release chakra, and warns him against threats she senses. 194 291 She also shows concern for Little Blue during chakra-infusion experiments and excitement when finally permitted to fight in her own body. 107 316

Matatabi possesses immense chakra containing powerful negative emotions and natural energy. She can regulate the chakra she gives Toneri, filtering much of its harmful influence to preserve his control. 14 121
