Even Class Monitors Were Bought Off
Tian Yulan hadn't gone to Zeshu to argue with the manager—not because she didn't want to, but because she didn't dare. Instead, she wanted to find out where Xia Huanhuan was taking supplementary classes and send Yan Ziyou there too.
Tian Yulan secretly followed Xia Huanhuan for several days, but never managed to find out where she was taking classes. Instead, she got caught on the cameras Wang Yue had installed around his home.
That day, Wang Yue's surveillance system captured a series of photos and sent them to his phone. They gave him quite a scare. He'd only been a rich man in this world for a few days—could someone already have their eye on him?
He opened the photos. Wasn't that the "Noble Consort Nian"? Could she be playing Tian Yulan in this show?
Without giving anything away, Wang Yue found a photo of Tian Yulan and compared it with the ones from the cameras. Sure enough, it was her.
She was being so secretive, but surely it wasn't because of me. That only left the Xia family. Wang Yue was just as baffled.
As usual, they got together at lunchtime. Wang Yue told Xia Junshan what had happened and asked if his family had done something to upset Tian Yulan again.
"We haven't done anything to upset her. I'll keep an eye out from now on. Being followed out of the blue is a little unnerving. But what's this software of yours? It's amazing." Xia Junshan really was a top student; he focused on all the right things.
"Oh, I made the software myself. I can install it for you too, if you want. You'll have to buy the cameras yourself, though," Wang Yue said casually.
"No need for that. By the way, why did you install surveillance cameras? Don't tell me you're paranoid about people out to get you!" Xia Junshan teased him.
"Look at me. I can easily buy two houses. Do you think I wouldn't worry about attracting attention?" Wang Yue was helpless. In his previous world, he'd felt like people were keeping an eye on him toward the end. Maybe he'd been too reckless. So in this world, he'd been careful not to show off.
"Did you rob a bank? If you know a way to get rich, count me in!" Xia Junshan was genuinely surprised, but hadn't felt it was appropriate to ask outright. This was the perfect chance to find out.
"I can't teach you how I make money, but I do have another idea you could try." Wang Yue didn't keep it to himself. He remembered a stock that would go up tenfold that year, so he said, "This stock is doing really well right now. If you have some spare cash, you could buy a few shares. You're sure to make money."
"Is it reliable?" Xia Junshan asked doubtfully.
"Just buy a little to start with. If it doesn't work out, you can sell it." Wang Yue didn't push. After all, you couldn't force someone to buy.
"Fair enough!" Xia Junshan decided to give it a try. His salary was enough for him, but who ever complained about having more money?
"Are you still not done with Fang Yuanyang's design? I saw the director looking for you again this morning," Wang Yue said, changing the subject.
"Yeah. The building I designed to his specifications looks like a mess. He's not happy with it, but can't explain what's wrong. He doesn't want me to design anything—he just wants someone to draw it for him! The director could have assigned any assistant engineer to do that. He's deliberately making things difficult for me!" Xia Junshan got angry whenever he brought it up.
"Old Xia, this one's on you. Just have your assistant engineer draw up a set of plans to his specifications, then draw up another set yourself based on what you think he needs. Show him both, and he'll know which one to choose. Get this sorted out. It'd be embarrassing if the director caught you slipping up over this," Wang Yue advised. If Xia Junshan didn't resolve it soon, the job might really land on Wang Yue's desk.
"Why don't you design it for him? Honestly, I can't stand dealing with him," Xia Junshan said. The moment he heard Wang Yue had a solution, he tried to pass the problem off to him.
"Seriously? You're passing the buck so blatantly, and you're not even embarrassed?" Never Expected Xia Junshan to have gotten so shameless. But if he was already that shameless, why not just handle it himself?
"Guess you rub off on the people you spend time with. I chat with you for a few minutes every day, and look how much I've improved!" Xia Junshan seemed to have long since dropped his airs around Wang Yue.
"Keep dreaming. Fang Haiyang has his eye on you. You're not getting out of this." Wang Yue started eating. Xia Junshan could tell from his expression how it was going to end, so he fell silent, looking glum.
After work, Wang Yue returned home. His daughter, Yuan Yuan, was sitting there watching TV, while his son was still building with blocks. He couldn't help thinking that his son might follow in his footsteps.
He sat down between the two of them on the carpet, handing blocks to his son while chatting with Yuan Yuan. She excitedly told him all sorts of funny stories from school, but then suddenly grew unhappy. "Huan Huan lost her class monitor position today. She cried!"
"Oh, she cried? Did you comfort her? Tell her she can try harder next time!" Wang Yue noticed that Yuan Yuan was feeling down, so he played along and asked.
"There's nothing she can do. I heard from a classmate that the class monitor is chosen according to what the parents want. No matter how hard Huan Huan tries, it won't make a difference." Yuan Yuan felt sorry for her little friend.
"I see. How about I talk to your Uncle Xia tomorrow and have him contact a few parents to help her win it back?" Wang Yue teased Yuan Yuan.
"Maybe not. You might as well go to school yourselves and choose the class monitor, since it's all your decision anyway!" Yuan Yuan sighed.
Wang Yue was afraid she was worrying too much at such a young age, so he quickly changed the subject. "You come home and watch TV every day. That can't be all you do. How about learning something?"
"I don't want to go to tutoring!" Yuan Yuan thought her dad was criticizing her for watching TV at home, and her eyes immediately turned red.
But Wang Yue knew Yuan Yuan had been able to burst into tears at the drop of a hat since she was little, so he hurriedly explained, "I'm just asking if you're interested in singing or dancing or anything like that. Your Uncle Xia wants to sign Huan Huan up for an arts class. Is there anything you'd like to learn?"
"I don't know," Yuan Yuan said, looking bewildered. "Why does she have to take an arts class? It sounds exhausting."
"Well, your mom knows how to play the piano. Don't you want to learn?" Wang Yue tried another approach.
"No. Besides, you can't play either, Dad." Yuan Yuan still didn't want to give up her free time for nothing.
"How about I learn with you, then?" Wang Yue was willing to do whatever it took to get his lazy girl to try something.
"Then... okay!" Yuan Yuan thought that as long as her dad was with her, she'd be fine doing anything.
That night, after putting the children to bed, Wang Yue put his arm around his wife and asked, "This weekend, let's take our daughter to look at some arts classes and see if there's anything Yuan Yuan likes."
"What made you think of that? You've always said you wouldn't push her to study," Ruan Wan said, surprised.
"A few days ago, Xia Junshan wanted to find an arts class for his daughter. I thought that if there's something Yuan Yuan likes, we could sign her up too, just as a hobby. Haven't you noticed how much of a homebody she is?" Wang Yue was at a loss. Other kids loved going out, but theirs just wanted to stay home.
"Sure." Seeing that Wang Yue wasn't forcing their daughter, Ruan Wan didn't say anything more.
"Yuan Yuan just told me that in Zhang Xue'er's class, the class officers were chosen according to the parents' wishes. That's a terrible influence on the kids," Wang Yue said with a sigh. Judging by the show's plot, Tian Yulan had probably been behind it again.
"I don't know what some parents are thinking. They impose the way adults handle things on their children. Aren't they afraid they'll teach them bad habits?" Ruan Wan shook her head with a sigh.
"It's a reflection of how parents have been beaten down by society and come to examine themselves," Wang Yue said with a smile. "Every parent gives their child what they think is best, whether or not it's actually right for them."
"That's true. You can tell whether a family is happy by looking at the children," Ruan Wan said, agreeing.
"Everyone has their own way of thinking. Now that people can have a second child, if they don't do a good job raising the first, they can always raise the second one instead," Wang Yue joked to Ruan Wan.
"Oh, you!"
