Rumble, rumble~
It was an extremely heavy sound, indeed somewhat like footsteps.
But something about it also seemed subtly off.
Bronya was Russian, a steadfast materialist, and had never believed in ghosts or monsters.
Heavy Cannon Rabbit followed her, floating through the vast warehouse.
She searched diligently, yet found nothing.
As Bronya began patrolling, Zhao Bai launched his own investigation. He first went to the door and turned every light up to maximum brightness, then began inspecting the area at an unhurried pace.
Turning on the lights was not because he was scared, but because he did not want to trip.
This was a chemical warehouse. Any firearm could cause massive casualties. Bronya had only brought a vacuum cleaner, while Zhao Bai carried nothing more than an ordinary katana.
They moved from one corridor to the next.
Nothing.
Zhao Bai could always hear that strange sound, like war drums pounding beside his ears.
Yet he could never determine where it was coming from. He even pressed his ear against barrels of chemicals, listening carefully to the sound echoing through the liquid, confirming that it was not his imagination.
"Bronya, find anything?"
"No."
Whoooooosh~
The vacuum cleaner started up. Bronya was expressionlessly playing with it, turning it on and off as her light-gray spiral twin-tails fluttered in the wind.
Her expression did not change at all, but Zhao Bai knew that Bronya was disappointed.
As for why, it was probably because no translucent ghost glowing blue had appeared screaming, only to be sucked into the containment chamber by her Golden Herrscher Rabbit vacuum cleaner.
"So there really are no ghosts."
Bronya said something incredibly cute without changing her expression.
That clattering sound still rang in his ears. Zhao Bai had even pinpointed its location: an open patch in the warehouse. Yet there was nothing there. Bronya raised the vacuum cleaner and sucked every speck of dust from that area, but still found nothing.
"This sound... after examination, it is not footsteps."
Bronya said that since she spent every day with Heavy Cannon Rabbit, she was well versed in all kinds of mechanical structures. When a robot went without lubrication for years, every movement would make this kind of sound.
So there was an invisible robot here?
They investigated until the latter half of the night, but found nothing suspicious.
Bronya was visibly disappointed. She quietly yawned, returned to her expressionless state, and could no longer muster any interest.
Seeing this, Zhao Bai quickly suggested that they go home and sleep first, then try again another day.
