"It's a gift, right? I prepared a gift!"
Zhao Bai was surprised to see Theresa speaking so quickly, cutting off his own words.
Theresa's gifts were always significant and never disappointed Zhao Bai.
The white gift box, with gold patterns inlaid along the edges, exuded an air of luxury. The packaging had clearly been done with care, and Zhao Bai could imagine Theresa's conflicted expression.
He opened the wrapping paper to find another layer underneath.
After unwrapping five layers of paper, the item inside finally revealed its true form: a plain-looking pair of black-rimmed glasses.
Why glasses?
Zhao Bai was a bit bewildered. Fortunately, there was an explainer right beside him. He turned around and stared meaningfully at Theresa.
"This is a Sensory Deceiver,"
Theresa said proudly, "It's a device that researchers poured their hearts into developing. It can deceive your senses. As long as you wear these glasses, you can see anything as an ingredient."
"So, what does this thing do?"
Zhao Bai asked, confused. Upon hearing this, Theresa's blue eyes reflected a radiant glow, and she looked extremely pleased. She tiptoed and patted Zhao Bai's shoulder with some effort.
"After long observation, I, Theresa, leader of the Destiny Far East Branch and Director of St. Freya Academy, hereby declare that you have passed the assessment."
Chapter 21: What Do Girls Wear at Home?
Zhao Bai was intelligent enough to understand what this meant. Deceiving the senses meant opening a forbidden door. From this moment on, he could wield a blade against humans.
In the past, this was an absolute taboo.
For such a long time, Zhao Bai and Theresa had tacitly avoided discussing this matter, and things had been peaceful. Yet, today, Theresa had suddenly brought it out into the open, even handing the switch of death into Zhao Bai's hands.
Was this trust? Or a test?
Zhao Bai dared not delve deeper.
Although Theresa often appeared somewhat incompetent, Zhao Bai remained wary of her.
After all, she was the Director.
After a long pause, Zhao Bai slowly spoke, "Director, is it really okay to casually hand over the power of life and death to me?"
There was no joy, only a hint of apprehension.
Zhao Bai only wanted to be a chef; he had never considered becoming a fighter.
Seeing this, Theresa tiptoed and patted his shoulder, looking up at him with encouragement, her eyes seeming to flash with a radiant glow.
"I believe in you,"
She said, "After two years of observation, I've found your heart to be as clear as a mirror, strong and brave. You are neither violent nor extreme; you are practically a perfect being."
"And you're not a lolicon."
Theresa said with relief, "The kinder a person is, the more they should pick up a weapon and protect what they cherish with their own hands."
"I'm not a lolicon?"
