Background / History

Pursuit of Spirit Hall’s library

Yu Xiaogang left the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect hoping to access Spirit Hall’s vast collection of Martial Soul research, which he viewed as his route to shedding the label of “trash,” publishing theories, and earning renown. After identifying Bibi Dong as Spirit Hall’s Saintess, he spent three days observing her matches at Litang Great Soul Arena and planned to use his theories to gain her trust and access the library. 4

He repeatedly attempted to approach Bibi Dong under the title of “Martial Soul Theory Grandmaster.” His analysis of her defeat—claiming Zhao Linchuan’s failure to announce Spirit Skills and his evasive fighting were violations of chivalry—was ridiculed by Bibi Dong’s entourage and onlookers. 9 10

Zhao Linchuan publicly dismantled Xiaogang’s claims, exposing his weak cultivation and mutated Luo Sanpao Martial Soul. He further stated that Luo Sanpao possessed the latent potential to evolve into the Golden Sacred Dragon, but doubted Xiaogang could overcome his low Innate Soul Power and reliance on external treasures. 20 21

Disgrace and expulsion

Following his harassment of Bibi Dong, Xiaogang was drugged, kidnapped, and subjected to prolonged humiliation by a group later identified as the Thirty-Six Fierce Generals. Francis, the Spirit Arena manager, arranged the kidnapping for payment. 25 31

When Xiaogang returned to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect, his elder brother Yu Lingfeng confronted him with evidence of his public disgrace. Lingfeng rejected Xiaogang’s accusations that Spirit Hall had framed him, disowned him, and expelled him from the sect while still arranging for him to live outside it in comfort. 47 48

Xiaogang refused to abandon his theories. He instead vowed to write a book that would prove his worth, restore his standing, and make his name endure. Yu Lingfeng supplied him with a Black Card worth one million Gold Soul Coins to support him. 49

*The Ten Core Theories of Martial Souls*

Unable to obtain Spirit Hall research materials, Xiaogang compiled material from ordinary Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect texts, supplemented it with his own deductions, and authored The Ten Core Theories of Martial Souls. His manuscript was rejected by Hua Ying of Martial Soul Hall as material that would mislead students. 153 154

Yu Lingfeng nevertheless paid two million Gold Soul Coins to have Bi Weng Pavilion print the work. The book’s assertions—including prescribed Soul Ring absorption limits—led low-level Soul Masters to make fatal mistakes while absorbing Soul Rings. 155 157

The resulting scandal caused widespread outrage, damaged the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect’s reputation, and prompted the sect to permanently remove Xiaogang from its registry and sever all ties with him. 157 158

Spirit Hall erected twelve bronze statues of Xiaogang in humiliating poses, which the public repeatedly defiled. The reports and public reaction drove him into a breakdown; he blamed Spirit Hall and swore revenge. 159

Life in hiding

Yu Lingfeng arranged a marriage between Xiaogang and Huang Yingying, a slave with rank-eight Innate Soul Power. Xiaogang escaped on the wedding night, taking gold and items left by his brother; Huang Yingying separately fled as well. 160 161

Still pursued and periodically recaptured by the Thirty-Six Fierce Generals, Xiaogang lived in obscurity while continuing his research. He resolved to find a disciple with Twin Martial Souls, believing that successfully training such a person would prove his theories and give him the means to oppose Spirit Hall. 190 191 206 207

While investigating reports of Ah Yin’s Blue Silver Grass Martial Soul, he deduced that her Innate Full Soul Power and combat ability likely indicated a second, high-quality Martial Soul. 242

After his identity was exposed in Niuma Town, Xiaogang fled under the name Tang Wei and headed to Nuoding City, hoping an old acquaintance could shelter him. 243

Teacher at Nuoding Academy

At Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, Xiaogang recognized that Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power could not be explained by ordinary Blue Silver Grass alone. He correctly inferred that Tang San possessed a second Martial Soul, then used this discovery and his theorist persona to persuade Tang San to become his disciple. 278

Huang San later posed as Xiaogang’s son, presenting Luo Sanpao and Blue Silver Grass as Twin Martial Souls. Xiaogang accepted the claim, arranged Huang San’s academy registration, and instructed him to publicly present Blue Silver Grass as his main Martial Soul while concealing Luo Sanpao. 280 281

When Tang Hao confronted him over Tang San’s apprenticeship, Xiaogang offered Huang San as a test subject for the risks of cultivating Twin Martial Souls. He proposed that Huang San endure dangerous experiments so Tang San could follow the safest possible cultivation path. 306

After learning that his father, Yu Yuanzhen, had died at Spirit Hall’s hands, Xiaogang’s hostility hardened into a vow to destroy Spirit Hall and avenge him. 307

Capture and execution

Tang San and Wang Sheng became suspicious of Xiaogang’s concealed identity. They abducted him from his room, interrogated him at an abandoned stream, and delivered evidence linking him to the outlawed Ten Core Theories of Martial Souls. 318 322

Imperial authorities detained Xiaogang as a major criminal whose writings had caused widespread harm. His former disciples were implicated by their association with him, while Huang San was punished for concealing his father’s crimes. 322 324

Xiaogang was executed by a sentence of a thousand cuts, with Tang San and Huang San ordered to carry it out. He died in pain and humiliation, cursing Zhao Linchuan and blaming him for destroying the life Xiaogang believed he deserved. 328 329

Yu Xiaogang is initially presented as an ordinary, somewhat strange-looking middle-aged man who carries books and attempts to project a refined, scholarly image. His carefully maintained bearing deteriorates as his failures and public disgrace accumulate. 278 328
