Background / History

Mu Chen returned to Northern Spirit Academy after being expelled from the Spirit Path. Rather than becoming discouraged, he immediately resumed cultivation, stating that he had people he wished to see and protect; he broke into the Spirit Movement Realm soon afterward 1.

Though raised as the young master of the Mu Region, Mu Chen carries the royal bloodline of the Buddha Ancient Clan through his mother, Qing Yan Jing. He inherited her talent for Spirit Arrays, cultivates the Great Pagoda Art, possesses the Nine Divine Meridians, and acquired a page of the Immemorial Catalogue during the Spirit Path 1.

At Northern Spirit Academy, Mu Chen rapidly rose through the student ranks. He defeated Liu Yang in the Two Academies Competition, challenged and overcame older Heaven Tier students—including Luo Tong—and began cultivating the dangerous Netherworld Death Seal 4 6. During the Northern Spirit Plains trial, he killed Xue Tu but was falsely accused of murdering Liu Mubai; Teacher Mo verified that Mu Chen had an alibi after separating from Liu Mubai 15 17.

Mu Chen chose Northern Cang Academy in order to reunite with Luo Li despite his reluctance to remain in the same academy as Qing Luo 29. There, he established himself as a leading freshman, took first place on the Spirit Soul Ranking, led the Spirit Array Group, and repeatedly sought to close the gap between himself and Qing Luo 58 102.

His rivalry with Qing Luo escalated through public duels, the Hunting Battle, and clashes over Luo Li and Ling Xi. Mu Chen repeatedly relied on increasingly dangerous methods—including drawing upon Ling Xi's Spiritual Energy and the Spirit Array Disk—to gain enough power to challenge Qing Luo 75 79 102. After the destruction of the disk, he passed the Physical Tribulation but was defeated and mutilated by Qing Luo; Ling Xi's plea ultimately stopped Qing Luo from killing him 113.

Northern Cang Academy later rebuilt Mu Chen's body with rare medicines and an Earthly Sovereign's power. He trained under Northern Darkness Dragon Kun, mastered the Six-Mark Thunder God Body, completed the Great Pagoda Art, and became a Dao Child renowned for his Spirit Array talent 115 149 150.

Mu Chen was later believed dead, but Heart Sky Demon Emperor revived and recruited him for the Outer Realm. He accepted leadership of the Evil Spirit Clan, driven by his hatred of Qing Luo and the promise of revenge 261. He eventually returned as a Saint Heavenly Sovereign, publicly presenting himself as Qing Yan Jing's son and accusing Qing Luo of betraying the Great Thousand World 286.

Mu Chen is exceptionally determined and willing to endure harsh cultivation, dangerous techniques, and severe injury in pursuit of strength. He trained almost constantly under Mu Feng, challenged stronger opponents without retreating, and continued advancing even after repeated defeats by Qing Luo 30 58 113.

His confidence often develops into pride. He initially refuses to form a team for the Northern Spirit Plains trial, dismisses Liu Yang as beneath his notice, and becomes increasingly frustrated whenever Qing Luo's power exposes the difference between them 5 7 10. This frustration later becomes an obsession with surpassing Qing Luo and regaining Luo Li's regard 75 79.

Despite this fixation, Mu Chen shows strong attachment to those he considers his own. He intervenes when Tan Qingshan is bullied, remains devoted to Qing Yan Jing despite her absence in his childhood, and returns to protect her after becoming a Saint Heavenly Sovereign 5 100 286.
