Jiang Lan was born to a human father and Jingwei, a goddess associated with medicine and later the Vast Sea. Though she possessed mortal traits, she inherited divine authority completely and was considered a pure-blooded Celestial God. Her body differed slightly from a human's, including birdlike feathers on her back inherited through her maternal line. 158 174 177 191

She lived among humans rather than remaining in the Heavenly Court, where she had no friends and was openly avoided by many gods. In human settlements, she treated the sick by directing venomous insects to draw out illness, while also teaching humans simple spells and the Sword Qi she learned from Bai Qiuran. 159 164 170 171

Marriage and Defiance

Eastern Emperor Taiyi ordered Jiang Lan to marry Bai Qiuran, intending to use their union to seize her authority. Jiang Lan accepted the arrangement to protect humanity, but initially imposed strict boundaries on Bai Qiuran and treated the marriage as a political alliance. 173 174

To shield Bai Qiuran and the human race from Taiyi's suspicion, Jiang Lan sacrificed her Vast Sea authority to forge it into the divine sword Clear Autumn Waters. The process left her weakened, and she entrusted the weapon to Bai Qiuran because it could withstand his True Essence. 180

When the Heavenly Court purged human settlements, Jiang Lan fought to protect survivors despite having her divine power and office stripped away. Bai Qiuran broke through the Heavenly Dao's barrier to rescue her, then openly rebelled against Taiyi at her side. 184 185
