"Does it bleed?"
"Yes."
"Then how do you deal with it?"
"When I bleed, I have a premonition and deal with it quickly. If there's no time, I have spare pants that I can change into and find an opportunity to wash."
"..."
Surviving in the Apocalypse is truly difficult.
Lu Xi'an carefully examined Yao Wei's pants. They were weathered and seemed to have some residual stains, but he couldn't see them clearly.
He had always thought they were traces left from encounters with people or beasts, but he never imagined they were from Yao Wei herself.
Yao Wei had always appeared strong and capable, so powerful and skilled that Lu Xi'an almost believed the New Humans of this world were warriors who had gone through menopause.
After all, based on his current knowledge of the characteristics of New Humans, they had evolved in ways that facilitated survival in the Apocalypse environment.
Women's physical issues were indeed a major obstacle to survival in a harsh and resource-scarce world.
Yet, he hadn't expected that Yao Wei, a New Human woman, would tell him that those inconvenient physiological characteristics still existed in her.
Clearly, without anyone to guide her, Yao Wei didn't fully understand her own condition. She had only discovered some patterns and developed simple coping methods through years of solitary living.
--However, her ability to predict her own special circumstances was quite impressive.
This was probably another special ability of New Humans.
The air suddenly turned cold, and Lu Xi'an frowned, glancing in the direction of the tunnel.
It seemed another cold snap had arrived.
Or perhaps it had already arrived, and they were only just feeling it now. After all, the basement had a certain degree of warmth and insulation.
But the severe cold outside would eventually affect this place if it lasted long enough.
The outside temperature could even affect this underground Shelter.
There was no heating system like air conditioning in the Shelter. It was a pity that the car's air conditioner couldn't be moved inside, as there was no place for the external unit.
The only way to keep warm here was to wrap up in blankets.
Fortunately, there were ten dormitories and eighty beds in the Shelter, so there were plenty of blankets.
"The weather's getting colder again. Why don't we stay here for a few more days until you're feeling better?" he suggested.
Yao Wei shook her head and said calmly, "I'm fine. I can endure it. It won't affect us."
Lu Xi'an asked, "What if it starts snowing?"
"Let's see," Yao Wei replied, unconsciously frowning for a moment before quickly relaxing her brow, acting as if nothing was wrong.
It seemed she was indeed used to it; she could tolerate this level of pain.
"Then let's go take a look first. Put on your jackets."
Lu Xi'an said, adding a thick layer of clothing to himself as well.
"Okay," Yao Wei agreed, draping her red leather jacket over herself.
Lu Xi'an glanced at her and suggested, "Do you want to wrap another blanket around yourself?"
Yao Wei nodded and actually followed his advice, wrapping herself in a blanket. Since there were plenty of blankets here, she might as well use one.
The two left the Shelter and walked through the tunnel. The air grew colder and colder. When they reached the cave entrance, although it was sealed tightly with no gaps for wind to blow in, Lu Xi'an could still vaguely sense the cold current drifting by.
This time, they didn't call Doggy. They were just checking if it was snowing outside, so there was no need to call him.
If they decided to leave later, they could call Doggy to deploy the drone for reconnaissance.
Lu Xi'an moved a large stone aside, opening a small gap. The bright white light from outside instantly shone in, accompanied by a damp wind that immediately hit them.
Large snowflakes were falling diagonally in the wind, quickly leaving a white layer on the stones at the cave entrance.
"Alright, heavy snow is blocking the entrance. Heaven wants us to stay. Let's wait a bit longer," Lu Xi'an said with a smile, his exhaled breath forming white mist in the light streaming from the cave entrance.
"Mm," Yao Wei didn't object. Driving in this situation would be dangerous, the car wouldn't move fast, and it would consume a lot of fuel. They really couldn't leave.
Lu Xi'an resealed the cave entrance and said, "Let's go back and get under the blankets to warm up."
They retraced their steps. Lu Xi'an said, "I don't know how long this freeze will last. I hope it's short, like last time."
But who could predict the will of heaven? He had experienced cold spells that lasted ten days, or even a month.
Yao Wei said, "If it lasts too long, we'll have to disconnect the wires from the car battery."
Lu Xi'an understood what Yao Wei meant. "You mean the battery cables, right? Don't worry. We'll see how things are in a couple of days. If it's still like this, I'll go change them. You just stay warm in bed while you're not feeling well."
If the car is stopped for too long and the weather is too cold, the battery's charge will likely be depleted quickly.
If the battery cables aren't disconnected before the charge runs out, the car won't be able to start when they need to drive.
"Okay."
Yao Wei didn't stand on ceremony and agreed.
After returning to the Shelter, the two of them gathered several quilts and brought them to the dormitory where they were staying.
Lu Xi'an waited outside and said, "Hurry and take off your coat and get into the quilt."
"Mhm."
Yao Wei agreed, took off her red leather jacket, and burrowed into the quilts. She wrapped herself in several layers of quilts and finally felt comfortable.
"All set."
She said to Lu Xi'an, then turned to see him standing at the doorway, showing no intention of getting into his own quilt.
"Aren't you lying down?"
She asked.
Lu Xi'an said, "I'll wait a bit. You lie down, and I'll come over later."
"Oh."
Yao Wei felt a little confused, not knowing what Lu Xi'an was going to do.
As soon as Lu Xi'an finished speaking, he left through the doorway. She could only lie there quietly and clear her mind.
There was a slight discomfort beneath her, but it was okay. She was already accustomed to moments like these; she just had to endure it.
The several layers of quilts covering her finally had some weight, but it felt good and was very warm. Only her feet, however, seemed to never warm up and were getting colder instead.
She bent her legs, tucking her feet up, and felt like it was a little better, but after a while, they felt cold again.
Just as she was about to tuck her feet up again, she suddenly saw Lu Xi'an return, holding a bowl and two mineral water bottles used for storing water.
The bowl was hers, and it was steaming. The bottles, for some reason, looked a little deflated.
What had Lu Xi'an done?
As Yao Wei was wondering, she saw Lu Xi'an place the bowl and one of the bottles on the table first. Then, holding the other bottle, he said to her, "Here's a treasure for you."
"What?"
Yao Wei didn't quite understand.
Lu Xi'an seemed to be referring to the bottle in his hand, but what kind of treasure could that thing be?
Then she saw Lu Xi'an walk to her bedside, take the pillowcase from the upper bunk, wrap the bottle in it, and slightly lift the quilt at her feet to tuck the bottle in.
A slightly burning sensation instantly washed over her, driving away the coldness in her feet. Yao Wei immediately felt better.
"How is it?"
Lu Xi'an asked with a smile.
"Mhm."
Yao Wei nodded heavily.
It felt really good.
